## About Banat Village Museum

At the edge of the Green Forest, in north-eastern Timișoara, stands a Banat village assembled from buildings brought from villages across the county and its surroundings: peasant houses with porches, farm outbuildings, water mills and oil presses, potters' and wheelwrights' workshops. Each building was taken down in its original place and rebuilt here, usually with the furniture and objects from the house itself. Across ~17 hectares, between paths, orchard trees and wattle fences, a walk feels like passing through several villages at once.

The idea of a village museum was put forward in 1928 by Ioachim Miloia, director of the Museum of Banat, who asked for a corner of the courtyard at Huniade Castle for the first wooden churches, crosses and houses. The present site was granted in 1967 and the museum opened to the public on 20 August 1971. It was closed between 1986 and 1995, then ran as a section of the Museum of Banat, and since 2000 it has been a separate institution under the Timiș County Council. In 2006 it also took over the ethnography collection of the Museum of Banat, with over 13,000 items.

### What you can see

The heart of the museum is the civic centre of the village: the town hall (from Sărăzani), the school and the inn from Bârna, the national house from Babșa and the wooden church from Topla, built in 1746 at Remetea-Luncă and moved to the museum in 1987. From here starts the “Alley of Ethnicities”, with houses of the groups that lived in Banat: Hungarian (Babșa), Swabian (Biled), Slovak (Nădlac), Ukrainian (Repedea) and a Serbian homestead. Along the paths there are also Romanian farmsteads from Căpâlnaș, Bata, Jebel or Zolt, potters' houses, a wheelwright's workshop and water-powered oil presses.

The museum also has replicas of homesteads where visitors can try out crafts, and permanent exhibitions in its pavilions: on roof tiles and ceramics, on the tools of Banat farming, and “A Day in the Life of the Village – Banat under Communism”, with about a thousand objects. The House from Dragșina, with its adobe and clay walls, opened in 2026, and a replica of a rammed-earth house recalls the deportations to the Bărăgan.

### Good to know

The museum was closed from January 2026 for reorganisation and reopened on 15 March 2026, with more buildings open to visitors than before. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the hours differ between the warm and the cold season.
