## About Palace of Culture in Ploiești

The Palace of Culture is a monumental stone building in the centre of Ploiești, with a columned portico on its south side, reached by a broad flight of steps. It was conceived as a Palace of Justice: in 1912 the project was entrusted to the architect Ernest Doneaud, and from 1923 he signed it together with Toma T. Socolescu. Work, halted in 1916 when Romania entered the war, resumed in 1923 and was completed around 1930; the building was inaugurated on 26 November 1933 in the presence of King Carol II. The style is Neoclassical, with French inspiration.

After 1951 the building was given other functions and became the Palace of Culture; the 1977 earthquake damaged it, and the renovation that followed was only partial. Today several cultural institutions work under the same roof: the Prahova County Museum of Natural Sciences, with the Museum of Man and the Aquarium, the “Nicolae Iorga” County Library and the “Acad. Eugen Simion” Prahova County Cultural Centre.

### What you can see

For a visitor, the palace means above all the two sections of the Museum of Natural Sciences. The Museum of Man follows the evolution of humankind on Earth, in rooms devoted to anthropogenesis, anatomy, genetics, biodiversity, protected areas, nature conservation and population. The Aquarium has 70 tanks holding more than 60 species from all corners of the world, about 1,200 rare and tropical fish in all, plus turtles and newts, in a quiet atmosphere where school groups often come.

From the outside, the stone façade, with its columned portico and the “Palatul Culturii” inscription beneath the skylit roof, and the broad flight of steps at the entrance are worth a look.

### Good to know

The museums are closed on Mondays and public holidays. A renovation funded from the PNRR (structural strengthening and energy renovation), covering the wing on Emile Zola Street, has not started: the works contract is suspended until 31 December 2026, and the museums are open.

## Don't miss
