## About Baroque Palace of Oradea

The Roman Catholic Episcopal Palace, known in town as the Baroque Palace, was commissioned by Bishop Adam Patachich, who wanted a residence worthy of his diocese. The foundation stone was laid in 1762, to the plans of the Viennese architect Franz Anton Hillebrandt, and the works were completed in 1777. The U-shaped building, three storeys high with a broken roof in the Austrian Baroque style, stands beside the Roman Catholic Basilica and the Canons' Row, with which it forms the largest Baroque ensemble in Romania.

In the communist period the state took the palace over. From 1971 it housed the Țării Crișurilor Museum, and after the restitution of the early 2000s ownership returned to the diocese. The museum paid rent for years and moved to its new home in the former Garrison building only in 2017, with the collections fully transferred by 2018. Since then the diocese has recovered and restored the interior, and the surrounding garden has been redesigned with European funds.

Today the palace works as the **Patachich Centre**, the diocese's visitor centre: a church art exhibition on three floors, rooms dedicated to Saint Ladislaus, temporary exhibitions and classical music concerts.

### What you can see

The main route climbs through the restored rooms on the first floor, with portraits of bishops, religious paintings, liturgical objects and old vestments, among walls with striped wallpaper and period parquet. For a supplement the Grand Hall, with Ferenc Storno's paintings of 1879 on the life of Saint Ladislaus, and the Matthias Corvinus Hall also open. On the ground floor you can see, free of charge, the exhibition on the cult of Saint Ladislaus and the memorial room of Cardinal Lőrinc Schlauch. The palace chapel keeps the frescoes and altarpieces painted by Johann Nepomuk Schöpf in 1776.

Outside, the yellow façade with its triangular pediment and windows with curved pediments is best seen from the garden. The surrounding park is a dendrological one: it has magnolias that bloom in early spring, an English garden, a Baroque one and a biblical garden, planted in 2020 next to the cathedral, plus an amphitheatre.

### Good to know

The palace is said to have 365 windows, one for each day of the year, but the figure appears only in guides and popular sources; the diocese's website does not confirm it, so we take it as a story. The Țării Crișurilor Museum is no longer here: if you are looking for the history, archaeology and ethnography collections, they are in the former Garrison building. The interior can only be visited during the Patachich Centre's hours (Monday to Saturday), while the garden is open daily, from early morning until evening.
