## About Brâncoveanu Palace in Potlogi

The palace at Potlogi is one of the oldest surviving residences in the Brâncovenesc style. Constantin Brâncoveanu built it from the ground up in 1698, the tenth year of his reign, for his eldest son Constantin, the presumed heir to the throne. The Cyrillic foundation inscription on the south front, with the Wallachian eagle, records the founding, and the works were overseen by the court official Mihai Corbeanu. The church of Saint Demetrius next door is older: the prince built it in 1683, while he was still grand spatharios.

After Brâncoveanu was executed in 1714, the court was looted by the Ottomans, who were searching for the prince's wealth, and entered a long decline: the outbuildings fell into ruin one by one, and consolidation work begun after 1950 was halted in the late 1970s. Rescue came only with an EU-funded project: between 2011 and 2015 the palace was restored and some of the courtyard buildings were rebuilt in the form they had in Brâncoveanu's day. The ensemble was inaugurated in November 2015 and is run by the "Curtea Domnească" National Museum Complex in Târgoviște.

Unlike Mogoșoaia, Potlogi is far quieter: an estate of almost three hectares in a lowland village, where you can see at your own pace what a Wallachian princely court looked like around 1700.

### What you can see

The rectangular enclosure is divided into three courtyards separated by walls and porticoed buildings: the reception court, almost square, running from the gate to the south front of the palace; the servants' court, with the kitchen, the carriage house and the servants' quarters; and the gardens behind the palace, stretching north towards the Sabar meadows.

The palace has a cellar, a ground floor and an upper floor. You climb the monumental staircase to the carved stone loggia, then walk through the upper-floor rooms — the banqueting hall, the throne room, the princess's and prince's chambers, the treasury room — with lunette vaults and floral stucco work still on the walls. The permanent exhibition shows period pieces, and the cellar, with four vaulted bays resting on a central pillar, is open too; from there a hiding place led up to the treasury room and a vaulted passage ran outside, still intact today.

### Good to know

The ensemble is closed on Mondays. Guided tours are available only on request, booked by phone two days ahead; groups of more than 10 people get them free.

## Don't miss

- The 1698 foundation inscription on the south front, with the Wallachian eagle and the founder's name.
- The carved stone loggia at the top of the monumental staircase.
- The cellar, vaulted in four domes on a central pillar, preserved from Brâncoveanu's time.
- The floral stucco work and lunette vaults in the upper-floor rooms.
- The church of Saint Demetrius, built by Brâncoveanu in 1683, right next to the palace enclosure.
