## About Cuza Palace in Ruginoasa

The palace at Ruginoasa was built in the early 19th century by the treasurer Săndulache Sturdza, who brought the architect Johann Freiwald from Vienna to raise a Neoclassical residence on the site of the family's old manor house; it was finished around 1814. His son, the chancellor Costache Sturdza, remodelled it between 1847 and 1855 with the architect Johann Brandel into a square Neo-Gothic palace with stepped gables, pinnacles and balconies on stone brackets, strikingly similar to the one his Sturdza cousins built at Miclăușeni.

Mortgaged and put up for auction, the estate was bought in 1862 by Alexandru Ioan Cuza, prince of the United Principalities. Princess Elena Cuza furnished the palace with pieces ordered from Paris, and the ruling family inaugurated it at Easter 1864. After his abdication Cuza died in exile in Heidelberg in 1873 and, as he had wished, was buried at Ruginoasa, beside the palace church. The historian Gheorghe I. Brătianu was born here in 1898.

The palace served as a military hospital in the First World War and later as a railway workers' sanatorium, and was left almost in ruins by the fighting of 1944. It was rebuilt between 1967 and 1978 and opened in 1982 as the Alexandru Ioan Cuza Memorial Museum, part of the Moldova National Museum Complex in Iași. Between 2008 and 2013 it was strengthened and completely refurbished.

### What you can see

The rooms have been recreated from Elena Cuza's order to her Paris suppliers and from the palace inventory drawn up after 1864: the drawing room and guest room, the dining room and the reception hall on the ground floor, then, upstairs, the Gothic-style library, the prince's study and bedroom, the Great Drawing Room with original Louis XV furniture, Princess Elena's sitting room and bedroom, and the children's room. In the library a life-size hologram of Cuza delivers excerpts from his speeches. In the courtyard, in a glass pavilion, you can see the prince's original sleigh, restored, and a replica of his carriage.

Behind the palace stands the estate church, built by the Sturdzas in 1811–1813 in Neoclassical style, with Ionic columns at the entrance. In the narthex is the Sturdza family crypt, with the reliquary holding the remains of Cuza's two sons, and the church also keeps the prince's original Carrara marble tombstone. The park, with its broad alleys, and part of the enclosure wall with Gothic bastions complete the ensemble.

### Good to know

Cuza's remains are no longer at Ruginoasa: they were evacuated to Curtea de Argeș in 1944 and have rested in the Three Hierarchs Church in Iași since 1946. What remains at Ruginoasa is the crypt prepared in 1907 and the original tombstone.

## Don't miss

- The hologram of Alexandru Ioan Cuza in the library, where the life-size prince delivers excerpts from his speeches.
- The Great Drawing Room upstairs, with its original Louis XV suite of furniture, reupholstered from period documents.
- The prince's original sleigh and a replica of his carriage, displayed in a glass pavilion in the palace courtyard.
- The estate church behind the palace, with Cuza's Carrara marble tombstone and the reliquary holding his sons' remains.
- The Neo-Gothic façades seen from the park, with their stepped gables, pinnacles and wrought-iron balconies.
