## About Oradea City Hall Palace

The City Hall Palace closes Oradea's Piața Unirii on the side facing the river. It was built in 1902–1903 to plans by the architect Kálmán Rimanóczy Jr., on the site of the Roman Catholic bishop's residence of the 18th century. The style is eclectic, with Renaissance touches, and the asymmetrical plan shows at once from the façade: a central block with columns and three tall arched windows and, on the left, towards the Crișul Repede, the clock tower. The building was solemnly inaugurated at the start of 1904. Its roof burned in 1944, during the fighting for the city, and between 2019 and 2021 the palace went through a major restoration: a new copper roof, renewed façades and restored ornaments, some of them gilded with gold leaf.

The palace is still the seat of the city hall, so its interior is not a museum with fixed hours. What anyone can visit, with a ticket, is the **City Hall Tower**: almost 50 m high and four levels, three of them serving as viewing platforms. The clock in the tower was made in 1904 by the locksmith and clockmaker Mezey Dezső and plays Iancu's March at fixed hours between 8 and 20, one of the sound landmarks of the city.

### What you can see

From the square and from the bank of the Crișul Repede you can admire the main façade, with its columns, sculptures and the city's coat of arms, and the tower with its four clock faces. In the tower, the first level holds the clock mechanism and the second, at 33.85 m, is the former fire-watch post, where a red flag was raised by day and a floodlight lit at night. On the third level, at 40.25 m, several large hammers strike every quarter of an hour. The top level has a telescope and the most open view over the centre; as space is small, only 5 people go up at a time.

### Good to know

The tower was closed to the public in May 2026 because of renovation works on the city hall building, and reopened on 18 July 2026. In early May 2026 the clock was stopped for a few days while an electrical panel was replaced, so check before you come that everything is working.
