## About Știrbei Palace

Știrbei Palace stands at Calea Victoriei 107, near Piața Romană, between Banului and General Constantin Budișteanu streets. It was built around 1835 for Barbu Știrbei, the future ruler of Wallachia, to plans by the French architect Michel Sanjouand, in a Neoclassical style with Greek elements. During his reign, Barbu Știrbei used the house as a ceremonial residence, with balls and soirées.

In the 1880s, Prince Alexandru Știrbei entrusted the building to the architect Friedrich Hartmann, who added an upper floor, the north-eastern tower and the façade with four caryatids that anyone walking along Calea Victoriei recognises. After nationalisation, the palace housed the Museum of Folk Art (1954–1977) and then a museum of glass and ceramics, a branch of the National Museum of Art, until 1994. It was returned to the Știrbei family's heirs, sold in 2005 and bought in 2019 by the Hagag group, which restored it. It is a Category A historic monument.

### What you can see

The main façade facing Calea Victoriei has a central block with tall columns, crowned by four caryatids, and the square tower rises to the right. In front, a wrought-iron fence surrounds the courtyard with its lawn and shrubs, through which you reach the entrance. From the side streets you can also see the garden side, with the steps of a side entrance.

Since December 2025 the palace has housed TOFF Galleries, the first luxury department store in Romania, on nearly 4,000 m² spread over the basement, ground floor, upper floor and attic. Inside are fashion, perfumery, jewellery and homeware departments, plus a Baccarat Experience Bar.

### Good to know

The palace is now a store, and you go in during its opening hours, as in any shop. The interiors are laid out for retail, not as a museum, and a visit amounts to what you see in the store. The façade can be seen at any time from Calea Victoriei, from the pavement opposite.
