## About Victoria Palace

Victoria Palace, the seat of the Romanian Government, stands in Victory Square (Piața Victoriei) and takes its name from it. It was designed by the architect Duiliu Marcu (1885–1966), trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, who conceived it as part of an urban ensemble rather than as an isolated building. Work began in 1937, and by 1944 the palace was finished.

The bombing of 1944 damaged it, so work resumed and was completed only in 1952. The main façade, originally clad in Carrara marble slabs, was rebuilt then in travertine, and the sculpted decorative panels on the two side projections were removed. Designed for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the palace housed that ministry and the Council of Ministers under communism; since 1990 it has been the seat of the Government. Since 2004 it has been on the List of Historic Monuments (LMI code B-II-m-A-19877).

### What you can see

The building is seen from Victory Square. The style is simplified neoclassical: straight lines, a row of tall stone piers with arches at ground level, and almost no ornament.

The interior cannot be visited; the architect sought the same modern simplicity on a classical foundation in the interiors as in the façades.

### Good to know

The palace is a working seat of government: the interior has no visiting hours, and access to the building and the courtyard is controlled. The façade can be seen at any time from the square.
