## About Black Eagle Palace

The Black Eagle Palace (Palatul Vulturul Negru) is the best-known building on Piața Unirii and one of the landmarks of Art Nouveau Oradea. It was built in 1907–1908 in the Secession style, to plans by the Oradea architects Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab, on the site of an older building. From the start it was meant as a meeting place for the town: a casino, hotel, offices and restaurant, and then, between the wars, Oradea's largest hotel, with cafés and a cinema.

It consists of two asymmetrical wings with red roofs, green ornaments on the gables and a clock tower with a green spire, joined by a passage covered with glass. The passage links Piața Unirii with Strada Independenței and Strada Vasile Alecsandri. The name comes from the black eagle with open wings in the stained-glass window that fills the arch at the entrance to the passage, made in 1909 in the Neumann K. workshop in Oradea.

### What you can see

The façade facing the square, with two registers of windows, balconies with iron railings and finely worked gables, is best seen from the middle of the square. From the entrance arch you look at the stained glass against the light, and in the passage you find the vault of glass and metal, the painted bands with folk motifs beneath it, the wrought-iron lamps and the café terraces. At the entrance from the street, the vaulted ceilings keep painted decoration in the same colours.

### Good to know

The palace is not a museum: the ground floor and the passage hold cafés, bars, galleries and shops, and the upper floors offices, so you visit it as a public space, at the pace of the venues. We did not find an official schedule for access to the passage; in the evening it is lit and lively, but check on the spot. In June, on World Art Nouveau Day, Oradea Heritage organises guided tours and projections on the stained glass here.
