## About Botanical Park (Parcul Botanic)

The Botanical Park, which the people of Timișoara also call the Botanical Garden, is a park of over 8 hectares right in the Cetate district, between Piața 700 and Piața Mărăști. The land was once a military drill ground, and in 1902–1903, when the Cadet School (today the New Clinics) was built, the landscape architect Árpád Mühle laid out a first garden here. The park of today comes from a plan by the architect Silvia Grumeza, drawn up in 1966 after she studied the Botanical Garden in Bucharest. It opened to the public on 29 June 1986, and between 1986 and 1990 more than 1,650 species were planted, brought from parks around the country, from private collections and through international seed exchanges. It had the status of a scientific reserve from 1995 to 2009.

The collection has thinned since then: recent sources speak of around 200 species, so the park is today mostly a place for a walk rather than a botanical garden in the strict sense. It is run by Timișoara City Hall, through its horticulture services.

### What you can see

The park is divided into sectors, in the tradition of botanical gardens: ornamental flora, with a rose collection, the flora and vegetation of Romania, with a Banat subsector, Mediterranean flora, flora of the Americas and of Asia, medicinal plants and a corner with greenhouses. Since 2008 there has been a Japanese garden with a traditional-style tea house. Among the rare trees, hard to find in the city's other parks, are the katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum), Kalopanax pictus and the Chinese fringetree (Chionanthus retusus). Near the main entrance, on Gheorghe Dima street, are the flower beds in front of the New Clinics, and in one corner of the park a fragment of the old fortress wall has been preserved.

### Good to know

The ornamental basins have been empty for years; the repair of the fountains, voted through the 2024 participatory budget, was reported in early 2026 as about 85% done, with no completion date. The park has had public lighting since 2022, when it was closed from 22 August to 7 November for the works; the area around the main entrance was replanted in 2025.
