## About Roses Park (Parcul Rozelor)

Roses Park is the rose garden of Timișoara, a city that likes to call itself the "city of flowers". Its beginnings go back to 1891, when the agricultural and industrial exhibition held in Timișoara had floral displays here, made by the gardeners Wilhelm Mühle, Franz Niemetz and Benő Agátsy and admired by Emperor Franz Joseph himself. The park as it is today dates from 1929, when the landscape architect Árpád Mühle, Wilhelm's son, and Mihai Demetrovici, head of the city's horticulture service, drew up the plan of the rosarium. By 1934 it held more than 1,200 varieties of roses, and between the wars it was called the Rosarium. It has had other names too, among them Queen Marie's Garden and, under communism, the "Ștefan Plavăț" Park of Culture and Leisure.

The bombing of 1944 destroyed almost everything, and the garden was rebuilt after the war. The latest major makeover dates from 2012: more than 11,000 square metres replanted with 9,024 roses, plus hundreds of shrubs and trees, 12 rebuilt pergolas, 77 benches and 12 Roman-style vases. The park now covers about 3.7 hectares, a few steps from the Bega canal.

### What you can see

The heart of the park is the former rosarium, with a geometric, classical plan: diamond-shaped beds edged with box hedging, the roses grouped by variety, and straight paths between them leading to the summer theatre. In places the paths are covered by white wooden pergolas with benches where you can sit in the shade. The rest of the park is looser, with winding paths, lawns and old trees.

Right at the entrance from Academician Alexandru Borza street stand the bust of Wilhelm Mühle, unveiled in 2013, and that of Árpád Mühle, from 2014. Beyond them, through an arch of greenery cut into a hedge, you can see the stage of the Summer Theatre, an open-air amphitheatre with a covered stage and hundreds of seats. Concerts, theatre performances and festivals are held here, among them the Opera and Operetta Festival of the Romanian National Opera in Timișoara.

### Good to know

The roses are at their best in May–June, with a second, weaker bloom in September. On performance evenings part of the park may be taken up. The state of the summer theatre's stage was a problem after the 2017 storm, but in summer 2026 it hosted festivals again.

## Don't miss
