## About Constanța Peninsula

The peninsula is the headland on which Constanța's old town stands, between Tomis Port and the commercial harbour. Greek colonists founded Tomis here, the town where the poet Ovid lived out his exile and which in late Roman times took the name Constantiana. Under the Ottomans it was a small market town, and after 1878 it grew with stone buildings, the churches of several communities, the town hall and the casino on the seafront.

Today the peninsula is a protected urban site listed as a historic monument, and it is best seen on foot: distances are short, and the ancient ruins, the mosque, the cathedral and the seafront are only a few minutes' walk from one another.

### What you can see

**Ovid Square** holds the poet's statue, cast in bronze by Ettore Ferrari and unveiled in 1887, in front of the former town hall in Romanian Revival style, home to the National History and Archaeology Museum. Beside the square, under a modern hall, you can visit the **Roman Mosaic Building**, a harbour building raised around AD 300 with hundreds of square metres of polychrome mosaic preserved in place.

A few streets away rise the **Carol I Mosque** (1910–1913), whose 47-metre minaret you can climb, and the **Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul**, built in Neo-Byzantine style at the end of the 19th century, with ruins of the ancient town in the park in front of it. On the seafront, beside the bust of Eminescu, stands the **Genoese Lighthouse**, a small stone lighthouse built in 1860. The promenade carries on past the casino to **Tomis Port**, with its yachts and terraces, and down to Modern Beach.

### Good to know

The History Museum building has been closed for rehabilitation since January 2026, for about two years. The aquarium on the seafront has been closed since 2023. Many old houses on the peninsula are run down or under renovation.

## Don't miss

- Ovid's statue in Ovid Square, with the Romanian Revival former town hall behind it.
- The polychrome floor of the Roman Mosaic Building, whose only animal motif is a dove hidden among leaves.
- The view over the peninsula, the port and the sea from the balcony of the Carol I Mosque's minaret.
- The ruins of Tomis in the park in front of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.
- The seafront walk from the Genoese Lighthouse, past the casino, to Tomis Port.
