## About Solomon's Rocks

Solomon's Rocks (Pietrele lui Solomon) are a group of limestone cliffs and towers in the forest at the edge of the Șchei district of Brașov, in the north-west of the Postăvarul massif, between Tâmpa and Stejerișul Mare. The Valea cu Apă stream, called the “Solomon river” by locals, runs through the middle of the area, forming a few small cascades and a narrow stretch between rock walls.

The name comes from a legend: King Solomon, chased by his enemies, is said to have leapt his horse across the chasm between two rocks and escaped, while his pursuers fell into the void. The story has no historical basis, and another version says the king had killed his brother. This is also where the “junii” of the Șchei district ride up on Thomas Sunday after riding down into the citadel, to throw the mace and dance the hora.

A 19th-century inn that fell into ruin stood at the entrance until recently; its last wall collapsed in October 2025.

### What you can see

The forest road runs through the valley between limestone walls, with tall rock on both sides and the stream stepping down over boulders. Next to the first rock a spring known as the L.I.D. spring comes out of a steep wall. The “Între Chietri” area has picnic tables, and the walls are used for climbing. From the higher spots you can see the valley from above, with the clearing and the road climbing in bends.

The forest road continues towards Poiana Brașov, so the place is also a starting point for longer hikes on Postăvarul.

### Good to know

The slope is unstable: stones and trees fall during thaws. In March 2026, tens of tonnes of rock came down onto the forest road, which stayed closed for a few weeks for clearing and checks of the rock faces. Stay on the road and the paths, do not stand under the walls and do not climb the rocks without equipment.

## Don't miss

- The limestone walls and towers of the Valea cu Apă valley, which you follow straight from the forest road.
- The small cascades of the Solomon stream, stepping down over boulders.
- The “Între Chietri” picnic area in the shade of the rocks, with tables.
- The legend of Solomon's horse, said to have leapt the chasm between two rocks.
- The forest road towards Poiana Brașov, for a longer hike on Postăvarul.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** from central Brașov head for the Șchei district and drive up Drumul Vechi al Poienii to the end of the district, at the entrance to the Valea cu Apă valley; it is a few kilometres from Piața Sfatului. ### Where to park

Next to the former inn there is a parking area and a roundabout, on private land according to the local press in 2023. It gets crowded on event days such as Thomas Sunday; come on foot from Șchei.

### Rules

The forest road is used by pedestrians, cyclists and sometimes forestry machinery: give way to vehicles. Stay on the road and the existing paths, away from the rock walls, where stones can fall. Climbing is done only with equipment and at your own risk. Do not light fires outside the designated places and take your rubbish with you. In an emergency call 112 or Salvamont.
