## About Râșnoavei Cave

Râșnoavei Cave opens in the limestone on the slopes of the Postăvarul mountains, above Râșnov, beside the Drumul Albastru (Blue Road) trail that links Brașov and Râșnov. The entrance is a low mouth at the foot of a limestone boulder, hidden in the beech and spruce forest. The cave is about 390 m long and decorated with flowstone. It has nothing to do with Valea Cetății Cave, the fitted and lit show cave on the same slope, about a kilometre to the north-east.

There are no steps, walkways or lights here: this is a cave in its natural state, for people who know how to move underground. Above the limestone it formed in sit rounded boulders of conglomerate, and from the cave a short path leads to the rock group called Bisericuța Păgânilor (the Pagans' Little Church), or the Temple of the Idols.

### What you can see

Inside, the tight gallery has rough limestone walls, low vaults and flowstone formations, and in places traces left by earlier visitors. Some sections are so narrow that they are passed on the belly, crawling or with the help of a cable. Outside, the entrance in the rock, wrapped in moss and foliage, is a sight in itself, especially in autumn.

### Good to know

Visits are only under the guidance of a guide or caver who knows the cave. It is not recommended for anyone claustrophobic, and after heavy rain it can flood. You need waterproof clothing, boots or wellingtons, a torch and a small rucksack.

## Don't miss

- The low entrance beneath a moss-covered limestone boulder, in the beech and spruce forest.
- The gallery of about 390 m with flowstone, in a cave left in its natural state.
- The rounded conglomerate boulders above the cave, lying over the limestone in which the cavity was carved.
- Bisericuța Păgânilor (the Temple of the Idols), about 0.9 km away on the yellow-triangle trail.
- The viewpoint near Bisericuța Păgânilor, looking over the western slope of Postăvarul and the northern end of the Bucegi.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**On foot:** from Râșnov, climb the marked trail through Valea Cărbunării, about 1 hour to the cave; another trail leaves towards Valea Cetății, passes Bisericuța Păgânilor and meets the first on the plateau, in ~3 hours. The cave also lies by the Drumul Albastru, the trail between Brașov and Râșnov, and from it the yellow-triangle trail runs to Bisericuța Păgânilor (~0.9 km, 15–20 minutes).

**By car:** as far as Râșnov, it is ~20 km (~35 minutes) from Brașov, on the road towards Bran. Leave the car in town and continue the climb on foot.

Public transport does not reach the cave; Râșnov has links from Brașov and a railway station on the Brașov – Zărnești line.

### Where to park

For the cave, park in Râșnov or on the road towards Valea Cetății, then continue on foot along the marked path.

### Rules

Entry is only with a guide or caver who knows the cave. Minimum gear: waterproof clothing, boots or wellingtons, a torch (ideally a spare too) and the smallest rucksack you can manage, since the passages are tight.
