## About Roman Fort of Ilișua (Arcobadara)

On a high terrace of the Ilișua river, on the Măgura plateau, some 4 km north of the Someșul Mare, the Romans built a fort in the 2nd century that watched over the Someșul Mare valley and the routes towards the Țibleș Mountains and the lands of the free Dacians. Together with the fort at Cășeiu, near Dej, it was one of the defensive bases of the province's north. The garrison known from inscriptions is Ala I Tungrorum Frontoniana, a cavalry unit, and a votive plaque of AD 213 dedicated to Caracalla is kept at the Bistrița-Năsăud County Museum.

Three building phases have been identified: a small earth-and-timber fort, then a larger one, also of earth and timber, with two defensive ditches, and finally the stone fort, rebuilt after a fire. Research began in the 19th century with the Torma brothers, from Cristeștii Ciceului, and continued in the 20th. Twenty-seven stone projectiles for ballistae were found inside. A model of the fort is kept at the Bistrița-Năsăud Museum Complex.

### What you can see

On the ground, visitors mainly see the ruins of the Roman baths in the south-eastern part of the village: two rectangular buildings of public baths, with rooms for changing, warm, lukewarm and cold bathing and with their own heating system. The fort itself no longer has visible walls; the place is read mostly in the terrain, on the terrace above the valley.

### Good to know

Since 2024 the forts on the northern limes of Dacia have been part of "Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia", inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; the site's protection zone has been extended to almost 500 hectares. Uriu Town Hall cleaned the area of the remains in 2026, and the commune has submitted a project outline for developing the site for tourism, which has not yet started. No visiting schedule is published; the site is in the open air.
