## About Sângeorz-Băi

Sângeorz-Băi is a spa resort at the foot of the Rodna Mountains, in the valley of the Someșul Mare river, at around 450 m above sea level. The spa area lies in the north-western part of the town, between the park and the forest, a little over a kilometre from the centre. The mineral waters here have been known for centuries: in 1770 the place appears on Austrian maps as a treatment site, and in the second half of the 19th century the resort developed under the name Băile Hebe, after the goddess of eternal youth.

The Hebe Society, made up largely of doctors, leased the resort from 1879 to 1902 and again from 1911 to 1928. After 1945 the villas passed into state ownership, and in the 1970s the two big sanatorium complexes appeared, the Hebe hotel, with 900 places, and the Someșul, with 600. The waters are recommended above all for digestive and hepatobiliary conditions, and the climate here for rheumatic conditions.

### What you can see

The mineral springs are numbered and captured in water pavilions from the socialist period, built next to the resort park, and in drinking taps. The park, with shaded paths, gazebos and sculptures, is the resort's place for a stroll. Among the buildings you will see the two hotel complexes of the 1970s and Villa 1, also known as Villa Porumbița: an interwar villa with a tower and arcaded loggias, a listed monument in an advanced state of decay.

### Good to know

The Someșul hotel, the largest complex in the resort, has been closed for years, and the big hotels run at reduced capacity. The town hall is carrying out a European-funded modernisation project for the resort (green spaces, pedestrian paths, cycle paths, lighting, an aqua park), due to be finished in autumn 2026, so some areas may be under works. Villa 1 can only be seen from the outside. Nearby, the Cheilor Waterfall is a separate attraction, in the Cormaia Valley.
