## About Sion Neolog Synagogue

The Sion Neolog Synagogue stands on the bank of the Crișul Repede, on Strada Independenței, in the centre of Oradea. It was built by the Neolog (reform) Jewish community, which had split from the Orthodox one in 1870: the foundation stone was laid on 9 April 1877 and the building was finished on 24 September 1878. The plans were by David Busch, the city's chief architect, and the construction was led by Kálmán Rimanóczy senior.

The plan is square, with three aisles, and above it rises a broad dome with an orientalising profile, resting on a drum with sixteen windows. The administrator describes it as a simplified version of the Nuremberg synagogue, built in 1874. The hall has room for about 1,000 people.

Oradea had one of the country's great Jewish communities; in 1944 thousands of the city's Jews were confined in a ghetto and deported, and few returned. The synagogue was restored in a cross-border project with the Jewish community of Debrecen and rededicated in November 2015. Today it hosts concerts, exhibitions, book launches and cultural or religious events.

### What you can see

The interior is the most spectacular part: the painted decoration is entirely in the Moorish style, the work of Mór Horovitz of Košice, with strictly geometric motifs in which the Star of David and the eight-pointed rosette recur. The cast-iron columns between the aisles lead the eye to the niche where the Torah scrolls were kept, closed by an iron grille with floral motifs that foreshadow Art Nouveau; above it is the synagogue's organ. Outside, the compact volume of the building is worth walking round, with the street façade topped by wooden rosettes.

### Good to know

The organ is being restored: its pipes were taken down in May 2026 and sent to a workshop in Hărman, and the work is due to be finished by 31 March 2027. Until then it cannot be heard. The synagogue is run by Oradea Heritage and hosts events, so check the schedule before you come. The city has other synagogues too, among them the Orthodox Aachvas Rheim, with its own opening times.
