## About St Michael's Cathedral

The Catholic bishopric of Transylvania was founded by King Stephen I of Hungary around 1009, with its seat at Alba Iulia. Of the first cathedral, an 11th-century basilica, only the foundations survive, marked today by a line of a different colour in the floor of the side aisles. The present building, much larger, began to replace it around 1200: a stone basilica with a nave and two aisles, a transept, two west towers and a tower over the crossing, 93 metres long.

It was struck many times: the Tatar invasion of 1241, the fire set by the Saxons in 1277, then the sieges around 1600. Each time it was rebuilt, and the phases can be read in the stone: the Romanesque nave, the Gothic choir of the late 13th century, the chapels of around 1500 and the Baroque pediment over the entrance. Between 1565 and 1715 it was a Protestant church; since 1716 it has again been a Catholic cathedral, today that of the Archbishop of Alba Iulia.

### What you can see

In the south aisle are the fragments of the funerary monuments of John Hunyadi, his brother John and his son Ladislaus; a few metres away, since 2016, stands the sarcophagus of Bishop Áron Márton. In the Várdai chapel, on the north side, lie the sarcophagi of Queen Isabella and her son John Sigismund, and set in the wall is the epitaph of Giovanni Morando Visconti, the architect of the fortress. Next to it, the Lázói chapel of 1512 has a façade carved in the style of the Italian Renaissance and is reckoned the oldest Renaissance building in Transylvania.

Also worth seeing are the Romanesque capitals with fantastic creatures in the north aisle, the early 12th-century "Maiestas Domini" relief, the high altar of 1783–1784 and the Kolonics organ of 1877. Outside, walk around the church: the Early Gothic west portal from after 1270, the Romanesque portal on the south side, once the bishop's entrance, and the reliefs on the east apses. From the south tower, open to visitors since 2016, you look over the fortress from almost 28 metres up.
