## About Șugaș Băi

Șugaș Băi (Sugásfürdő in Hungarian) is a small forest resort about 8 km west of Sfântu Gheorghe, in the valley of the Șugaș stream in the Baraolt Mountains, at roughly 775 m. It belongs to the municipality of Sfântu Gheorghe and is the town's leisure spot: in winter, with two ski runs with drag lifts and floodlighting; in summer, with an adventure park, forest walks and mineral springs.

The carbonated, sulphurous springs were first described in 1792 by a physician from Brașov, and the first guesthouse was built in 1873. Around 1900 the resort had hot and cold baths, a promenade and open-air music, and from 1937 it was linked to the town by a regular bus service. After the Second World War it declined; today the ski runs, the adventure park and the spa are run by the company Sepsi ReKreatív.

### What you can see

The runs come down the wooded slope next to the centre of the resort: the large run is 560 m long with a 150 m vertical drop, the small one 250 m with 65 m. Both are of intermediate difficulty, each has a drag lift and both are floodlit in the evening; they are groomed every evening, and the small run has snow cannons. At their foot you can hire ski and snowboard equipment, and instructors are available.

In summer the resort has an adventure park, a climbing wall, a mini-golf course and a tennis court, and the Șugaș Spa centre offers a sauna, a steam bath and hot and cold pools. Waymarked hiking and mountain-bike trails start from the resort and lead through the surrounding forests.

### Good to know

The runs only operate when there is enough snow, and the season is short; the small run usually opens first. Parking spaces in the resort are few and paid, so on busy days cars stay in the lower car park, from where buses go up.

## Don't miss

- An evening's skiing under the floodlights on the large run, 560 m long.
- The small run, 250 m long, with a drag lift and snow cannons, usually the first to open in the season.
- The adventure park, the climbing wall and the mini-golf course in summer.
- The sauna and the hot and cold pools of the Șugaș Spa centre after a day on the slopes.
- Walks on the waymarked trails through the forests around the resort.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** from Sfântu Gheorghe, head west up the DJ121C, ~10 km (~12 minutes), through the forest to the resort. From Brașov it is ~45 km (~50 minutes), via Sfântu Gheorghe, and from Miercurea Ciuc ~76 km (~1 hour 20 minutes).

**Public transport:** line 18 of the Sfântu Gheorghe urban bus network links the town with the resort from Tuesday to Sunday, leaving from the Casa cu Arcade stop at 10:00 and 16:00 and returning at 13:00 and 19:00. While the ski runs are operating, extra buses go up from the lower car park every hour on the hour (Monday to Thursday 16:00–20:00, Friday 16:00–21:00, weekends 09:00–21:00) and come down at half past. A ticket costs 2.5 lei; urban transport passes are not valid on these services.

### Where to park

At the entrance to the resort, next to the mini-golf course, a barrier records number plates; parking costs 3 lei an hour and can only be paid by bank card. Spaces are few: a sign on the road from town shows green or red to say whether there are free spaces; if not, you leave the car in the lower car park, from where the buses go up.

### Fees & discounts

Entry to the resort is free. On the slopes, one drag-lift ride costs 15 lei (11 lei for under-18s, over-60s and people with disabilities), and a ticket valid for 4 hours costs 140 lei (reduced 95 lei). Children under 5 ride free. The drag lifts are accessed with a card, for which a 15 lei deposit is charged, refunded when you return it. Residents of Sfântu Gheorghe get reduced rates with the Sepsi card. Prices may change from one season to the next.

### Rules

On the slopes, keep to the markings and safety rules; the drag lift can only be used with the access card. In the hills, stay on waymarked trails and wear suitable footwear. Bears live in the surrounding forests: do not leave food or rubbish behind and do not feed the animals.
