## About Șugău Cave

Șugău Cave (Súgó-barlang in Hungarian) lies in the Giurgeu Mountains, in a wooded valley of the Barlangos stream above the village of Voșlăbeni. It has over 1,000 m of passages on four levels, and the entrance opens at about 1,060 m above sea level. Inside it is 7–9 °C, with humidity above 90%. The cave is a speleological reserve in a protected area of just 17 ha, part of the Pârâul Barlangos Natura 2000 site, and bats use it as a shelter.

The first part to be known was the active passage, crossed by a stream. In 1934 the Tekerőpatak common-land association decided to open it to visitors and dug a tunnel that widened the entrance. The upper, fossil passage was discovered after 1965, and today's visitor route, of about 300 m, was fitted out in the 1970s. The cave is kept by the Gyilkosto Adventure Association of Gheorgheni, with authorised guides.

### What you can see

The cave has no electric lighting: the tour is made with hand-held or head torches handed out at the entrance, and the beam picks out stalactites, stalagmites, columns and coralloids, as well as aragonite and calcite crystals. The passages are narrow and slippery, and the guide says where to go. The entrance, closed by a metal gate, sits at the foot of a steep slope, about 100 m above the valley floor.

### Good to know

Entry is only with an authorised guide, in groups that set off every hour. The cave is closed on Mondays all year, and outside summer it is visited only at weekends, by appointment. Each visitor enters at their own risk.

## Don't miss

- The torch-lit tour through galleries with no electric lighting, at 7–9 °C.
- The stalactites, stalagmites, columns and coralloids of the upper, fossil passage.
- The aragonite and calcite crystals on the walls of the passages.
- The metal gate at the entrance, in a moss-green rock face about 100 m above the valley.

From Miercurea Ciuc it is ~53 km (~80 minutes), also on DN 12. From where you leave the car, the cave is about 10–15 minutes on foot, up a steep climb.
