## About Șureanu Ski Area

The Șureanu Ski Area lies in the heart of the Șureanu Mountains, in the commune of Șugag in Alba county, on the border with Hunedoara. The slopes run down from the alpine plateau between Șureanu Peak (2,059 m) and Aușel Peak (2,009 m), while further south rises Vârfu lui Pătru (2,130 m), the highest summit of the range. People have skied here since 2010, and the area is run by Ski Surianu.

The place is remote, far from towns and reached only by a mountain road, and the snow usually lasts from late November or December to April, depending on the year. This gives it a wild feel, with stretches of ungroomed snow suited to snowboarding and freeriding alongside the groomed runs.

### What you can see

The ten slopes add up to about 12.3 km and are grouped on three slopes of the mountain: Aușel, Curmătura and Șureanu. Some start in the open alpine zone, at around 2,000 m, and run broadly across the plateau; others run down through the forest. They are served by the Aușel chairlift and the Curmătura and Șureanu drag lifts.

From the top, weather permitting, you can see Vârfu lui Pătru and the Parâng to the south, the Cindrel and Lotru Mountains to the east and the Retezat to the west. About 1.5 km north of the slopes, below Șureanu Peak, lies Lake Șureanu, a glacial lake at 1,737 m.

### Good to know

The road from Lake Oașa up to the slopes is a mountain road, unpaved in places: in winter, snow chains may be needed. The lifts run depending on snow, wind and the number of skiers, and at the start and end of the season only a few slopes are open.

## Don't miss

- Skiing down from the open alpine zone, at around 2,000 m, on the broad slopes of the plateau.
- The runs that drop through the forest below the open alpine zone.
- The view of Vârfu lui Pătru, the Parâng and the Retezat from the upper part of the slopes.
- Lake Șureanu, a glacial lake about 1.5 km north of the slopes, below Șureanu Peak.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** from Sebeș, take the DN67C (Transalpina) through Șugag to Lake Oașa, then the mountain road up to the slopes; ~71 km in all (~2 hours). From Alba Iulia it is ~85 km (~2 hours 10 minutes), via Sebeș. The last stretch, from Lake Oașa, is narrow and unpaved in places: in winter carry chains or winter tyres and check the road conditions before you set off.

### Where to park

There are two car parks at the foot of the slopes, Raluca and Ada.

### Fees & discounts

Entry to the area is free. For the lifts, day passes or points cards are sold at the foot of the slopes; a ride on the chairlift costs more points than one on a drag lift. Prices may change from one season to the next.

### Rules

On the slopes, keep to the markings and safety rules. In the mountains, stay on waymarked trails, with warm clothes and suitable footwear: at 2,000 m the weather changes quickly, and wind and blizzards can stop the lifts. Do not leave rubbish behind and do not feed wild animals.

### Facilities

Accommodation and a restaurant at the foot of the slopes · two equipment hire centres · bars and three après-ski spots on the slopes · live webcams
