## About Timișoara National Theatre and Opera

The building known as the Palace of Culture (Palatul Culturii), on the north side of Piața Victoriei, houses four institutions: the “Mihai Eminescu” National Theatre, the Romanian National Opera, the German State Theatre and the “Csiky Gergely” Hungarian State Theatre. The National Theatre is the city's first professional theatre, founded in October 1945, and the Opera was founded by royal decree on 30 March 1946; its first performance was “Aida”, on 27 April 1947.

The building was designed by the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer, in Renaissance style, and opened on 22 September 1875. Two fires devastated it, in 1880 and in 1920; after the second only the side wings were left intact, and Duiliu Marcu rebuilt the auditorium and the main façade in the neo-Byzantine style. Between 1934 and 1936 he raised the façade with a travertine-clad “triumphal arch”, the one seen today. The restoration of the main façade took place between 2019 and 2022.

### What you can see

From the square you see the travertine façade, with its large arch and its loggia with columns, and on either side the wings with their period façades. The interior is seen at performances or on the Opera's guided tour. The Hall of Columns (Holul cu coloane), circular and set below street level, has eight columns with capitals decorated with floral motifs and masks. Upstairs, the Hall of Mirrors (Holul cu oglinzi) has marble-clad walls, large crystal mirrors and frescoes by Theodor Kiriakoff. The Main Hall (Sala Mare) is built in the “Italian box” style, with 600 seats in the stalls, boxes and balconies, plus 80 in the gallery; on the central box is a Latin epigram by Ovid, covered in gold leaf, and on the proscenium arch the inscription “Mundus scena – Vita transitus”. The building's balcony was opened in December 1989 as Timișoara's first free place: the theatre calls it the Revolution Balcony.

### Good to know

The building has no daily visiting hours: you go in with a ticket to a performance or to the Opera's guided tour, on the announced days. The National Theatre and the Opera have separate ticket offices and calendars, and you buy the ticket from the institution whose performance you choose. At the Opera the cloakroom is compulsory and free, and the hall cannot be entered once the performance has begun.
