## About Tropaeum Traiani – Adamclisi

On a plateau in southern Dobruja, at the edge of the village of Adamclisi, Emperor Trajan raised a triumphal monument dedicated to Mars Ultor, after the campaign of the winter of 101–102, when the Roman army repelled an attack by the Dacians and their allies south of the Danube. The inscription dates it to between 106 and 109. It was a huge cylinder, topped by a conical roof of stone scales and a colossal trophy; its height and its diameter were each about 40 m. Nearby lie the foundations of a funerary altar bearing the names of some 3,800 Roman soldiers who fell in battle, and of a mausoleum.

Over the centuries the monument collapsed to a core of masonry. Grigore Tocilescu excavated it between 1882 and 1890, and in 1977 it was reconstructed according to a hypothesis put forward by archaeologists, with copies of the carved pieces. Locals also call it "the Adamclisi Monument".

Some 2 km to the south-west lies the city of Tropaeum Traiani, founded by Trajan for veterans of the Dacian Wars and raised to the rank of municipium before 170. Rebuilt from the ground up under Constantine the Great in 316, the city was a bishop's seat in the 5th–6th centuries and was destroyed by the Avars and Slavs in 586. The monument, the city and the museum are run by the Museum of National History and Archaeology in Constanța.

### What you can see

At the monument you walk up the lime-tree avenue to the white cylinder, with its frieze of metopes showing battles, marches and the submission of prisoners, and above it the trophy with its armour and shields. From the plateau the plains of Dobruja stretch for dozens of kilometres.

The museum in the centre of the village, opened in 1977, holds the original pieces: 48 of the 54 metopes, arranged in the order of the fighting, the statue of the trophy, the inscription dedicated to Mars, the frieze of weapons and merlons carved with bound prisoners. In the city you can see the via principalis, the 300 m paved street between the east and west gates, with the enclosure wall and the ruins of several basilicas.

### Good to know

The three parts are a few kilometres apart, so you drive between them. The monument and the museum have separate tickets, and entry to the city is included in them. There is no shade in the city: in summer bring water and a hat.
