## About Wind Cave (Peștera Vântului)

The Wind Cave (Peștera Vântului) opens on the left side of the Crișul Repede valley, in the Frânturii glade, about 2 km from the centre of Șuncuiuș, on the northern edge of the Pădurea Craiului Mountains. With 42,165 m of surveyed passages (the figure in the speleological record and on the official Pădurea Craiului site; other sources give 50–52 km, as exploration continues) and a vertical range of about 170 m, it is the longest known cave in Romania. Its name comes from the strong draught at the entrance, which can reach several tens of kilometres an hour depending on the temperature difference between the cave and the outside.

It was discovered on 7 April 1957 by the engineer Bagaméri Béla, who explored the first 500 m. The Cluj Amateur Speleologists' Club was founded in 1966 to study it, and the known passages passed 15 km in 1967 and 40 km in 1989; exploration is still going on. The cave has four levels: the lowest is active, crossed by a stream that emerges at the spring below the entrance, and the other three are fossil levels. It is a protected cave with class A sectors, within the Crișul Repede Gorge – Pădurea Craiului Natura 2000 site.

### What you can see

The caving tour covers the first 800 m or so, the most richly decorated section of the cave: the first 400 m along the active passage, then a climb up nine fixed metal ladders, the tallest 10 m high, to the fossil passage. Along the way there are stalactites, stalagmites and draperies, and the landmark is the Torpedo (Torpila), a stalactite about 4.5 m long. The cave shelters bat colonies that hibernate and breed here. From outside you can see the glade, the entrance closed off by a concrete structure with a gate, and the suspension bridge over the Crișul Repede.

### Good to know

This is not a show cave and you cannot go in on your own: visits are only allowed with accredited caving guides, through local operators, who also provide the equipment. For visitors without experience, the nearest show cave is [Vadu Crișului Cave](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/pestera-vadu-crisului), about 14 km away by car; [Unguru Mare Cave](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/pestera-unguru-mare) is less than 1 km away.

## Don't miss

From the centre of the village take the paved road towards Bratca and, before the level crossing, the dirt road towards the Vântului and Unguru Mare caves.
