About Telega Salt Baths

Telega, a village near Câmpina, was for centuries one of the salt mines of Wallachia. It first appears in records in 1562, when Prince Petru cel Tânăr confirmed a monastery's right to the "salt toll" here. The mine was also a place of punishment: convicts sentenced to hard labour cut salt next to a prison with two wings, from which the outlaw Iancu Jianu escaped in 1816. The Telega salt mines were abandoned in 1872.

The hollows of the old mines filled with rain and spring water, leaving salt lakes on the surface; local sources name them Mocanu, Palada, Stavrica, Lacul Dulce and Baia Centrală. Baths grew up around them and were popular above all between the wars, mainly for rheumatism. Analyses published by the local council give the water almost 277 g of salts per litre, most of it sodium chloride. There are no galleries to visit: all you see today is the salt water on the surface.

Don't miss
  • A swim in the central lake of Băile Minerale Telega, in water with almost 277 g of salts per litre, where you float without effort.
  • The mildly sulphurous mineral mud of the Complexul Șoimul lake.
  • The salt therapy room at Complexul Șoimul, for an hour of salty air after your swim.
  • The Prince's Cross in the village of Melicești, raised to mark Prince Carol I's journey through Telega in 1866.

Good to know before you go

Getting there

By car: Telega lies ~6 km (~10 minutes) north-east of the centre of Câmpina: from Câmpina cross the Doftana river and follow the road to Telega. The baths are in the village centre, on Strada Principală, a few hundred metres from the town hall. Câmpina is on the DN1, ~35 km from Ploiești and ~100 km from Bucharest; Brașov is ~85 km away.

Public transport: the nearest station with passenger trains is Câmpina, on the Bucharest – Brașov line, ~7 km from the baths; Telega's own station is no longer in use. From the station, a taxi is the easiest option.

Where to park

Complexul Șoimul has its own car park by the entrance, on Strada Principală. We found no official information about parking at Băile Minerale Telega, nor about charges.

Rules

At Complexul Șoimul, the rules of conduct posted at the entrance are compulsory. The very salty water stings the eyes and must not be swallowed, so do not dive under. Salt-water bathing is not for everyone: if you have a chronic illness or are pregnant, ask your doctor first.
