About Beușnița Waterfall
Beușnița Waterfall is the largest in a chain of falls on the Beușnița stream, a short tributary of the Bei in the south of the Anina Mountains. The water rises from a karst spring below the Cornetu ridge, runs down a wooded valley and builds its own steps as it goes: being very rich in lime, it deposits stone on the moss and twigs it wets, and the resulting tufa grows year by year into small dams, pools and rounded terraces. The main fall is, by most accounts, around 15 m high, and it does not drop in a single sheet but spreads into dozens of thin threads over a wall of green moss, with a tufa overhang and small grottoes at its base.
Above it, the path climbs past two more falls, known simply as Beușnița II and III, almost to the spring; the park authority describes them as an unbroken chain of drops, step after step, over a thick bed of calcareous tufa. The area has been protected since 1943, when the Beușnița reserve was created, and today it belongs to the Cheile Nerei–Beușnița nature reserve, the park's strict protection zone, and to the beech forests inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2017.
Beușnița is a spring waterfall: in April–May and after long rains it flows in wide, noisy curtains, while by late summer it can be almost dry, with only damp moss on the rock. In cold winters it freezes into white columns.
What you can see
The walk in is half the experience: from the Bei trout farm and campsite you follow the forest road and then a path beside the Bei, whose turquoise water tumbles over tufa steps, up to Ochiul Beiului Lake. From the lake, the signpost reads "Cascada Beușnița 25 min": the path passes the first small falls on the Beușnița, crosses a little clearing (Poiana Beușnița) and arrives in front of the main fall, where you stand right at its foot, on the stones of the stream bed. A steep path climbs up the right-hand side of the waterfall to its top and continues for about 1 km up the valley to the upper falls, wilder and far less visited. On the way back down the Bei valley, the La Văioaga waterfall, below the trout farm, is worth the stop.
Good to know
The waterfall is not by the road: it is ~3 km each way from the trout farm and ~7.5 km (about 2 hours) from Podul Beiului, on a forest road and an easy path. In summer it may be dry; come in spring or after rain. You are in a strict protection zone, with horned vipers on the sunny paths: stay on the trail and do not climb on the wet tufa, which is fragile and slippery.
- The moss wall of the main fall, with the water spread into dozens of threads, seen from below, from the stones of the stream bed.
- The tufa steps on the Beușnița between the lake and the waterfall, where the water gathers in turquoise pools and spills over rounded ledges.
- The upper falls, Beușnița II and III, about 1 km upstream along the path that climbs up the right of the main fall.
- Ochiul Beiului Lake, 25 minutes downstream, with turquoise water clear to the bottom.
- The La Văioaga waterfall in the Bei valley, below the trout farm, a short detour on the way back.
Good to know before you go
- Getting there
By car: first head for Podul Beiului, on the Nera, at the end of the DJ571K, through the village of Potoc: it is ~20 km from Oravița (~30 min), ~14 km from Sasca Montană, ~70 km from Reșița (~1h25) and ~130 km from Timișoara (~2h20), on the DN59 and DN57 to near Oravița. From Podul Beiului the gravel forest road continues up the Bei valley for about 4.5 km to the Bei trout farm and campsite, where you leave the car; the road is narrow and potholed, with few passing places. From the trout farm it is ~2 km on foot to Ochiul Beiului Lake (35–45 min, yellow-stripe markings) and another ~1 km on the path to the waterfall (25–30 min, red-cross markings, in places also blue triangle); ~3 km each way in all, with a gentle climb. You can also leave the car at Podul Beiului and walk the whole way: ~7.5 km and about 2 hours each way.
Public transport: we found no regular services to Podul Beiului. The nearest you can get by bus or train is Oravița, ~20 km away, from where you need a car. On foot, the waterfall can be linked with Socolari (the park's red-cross trail, ~11 km, 3h30, with no motor traffic).
- Where to park
There are parking spaces at Podul Beiului, next to the park's information point, and at the Bei trout farm and campsite, the end of the road open to cars; beyond it vehicles are banned. Parking charges are not published by the park authority. On summer weekends the Bei valley gets crowded and cars end up parked in the forest; use only the designated spaces and arrive early.
- Fees & discounts
Entry to the Cheile Nerei–Beușnița National Park is paid (official website): adults €2 + VAT (~12 lei), pupils, students and pensioners €1 + VAT. Pay in cash at the information point at Podul Beiului or by text message to 7494 (code NERA1 for one adult, NERA2 or NERA4 for 2 or 4 adults, RNERA1 for the reduced rate); the text-message ticket is valid only on the day it is sent, and the confirmation message must be kept for the whole visit. The waterfall itself has no separate charge.
- Rules
You are in the park's strict protection zone: keep to the marked paths, do not climb on the waterfall's tufa (it is fragile and breaks easily) and do not go into the pools on the stream; the 2026 regulations ban swimming in tufa-bed streams and any climbing at the Beușnița falls. Dogs on a lead only, and you must carry their health papers. Fires are allowed only in the fire pits at the campsites, camping only at the Bei ranger station/campsite, and all litter goes back with you. No loud music. For drones, ask the park authority beforehand; commercial filming needs approval. Wear shoes with good grip, the stones by the waterfall are wet, and watch out for horned vipers on sunny paths.
- Facilities
