About Vârtop Pass
The Vârtop Pass, marked on hiking maps as Șaua Vârtop (the Vârtop saddle), is where the DN75 crosses the crest of the Bihor Mountains at 1,160 m. The road climbs from the Beiuș Depression through Lunca, Nucet and Băița, and on the other side drops towards the headwaters of the Arieș at Arieșeni. The saddle is the watershed between the Crișul Negru to the west and the Arieș to the east, and just east of it the road passes from Bihor County into Alba County. It is one of the few paved roads that cross the Apuseni Mountains from west to east.
The Vârtop holiday village has grown up around the pass, with guesthouses, chalets and ski slopes, the most important winter resort in Bihor County. The Piatra Grăitoare slope, served by a four-seat chairlift, is 1,880 m long and climbs to 1,445 m; next to it are the shorter Vârtop 1 and Vârtop 2 slopes, with drag lifts. In winter, avalanches have come down several times on the slopes above the road.
What you can see
From Băița the road climbs through forest, runs along a high stretch with views of Pietrele Negre and then drops gently into the broad saddle, with pastures, wooden huts and guesthouses. From the pass, or better from higher up on the slopes, you can see the forested ridges of the Bihor Mountains and, to the north, the Vârtop meadow. The descent to Arieșeni follows the Arieșul Mare valley past mountain homesteads scattered across the slopes.
Marked trails start from the saddle: to Groapa Ruginoasă, the huge red and yellow ravine nearby, to Piatra Grăitoare and Bihor peak (Cucurbăta Mare), and to Padiș. The quickest way to Groapa Ruginoasă is from a car park on the DN75 just below the pass, on the Bihor side.
Good to know
The road is open all year, but snow is deep in winter, and in heavy snowfall or when there is an avalanche risk traffic can be slowed or temporarily stopped. In summer, flash floods after torrential rain can wash debris onto the road between Vârtop and Arieșeni.

- Groapa Ruginoasă, the red and yellow ravine about 45 minutes' walk up from the DN75, just below the pass.
- The broad saddle of the pass, with pastures, wooden huts and guesthouses, on the watershed between the Crișul Negru and the Arieș.

Good to know before you go
- Getting there
By car: from Oradea take the DN76 via Beiuș and Ștei to Lunca, then the DN75 through Nucet and Băița, ~28 km of climbing to the pass (~115 km from Oradea, about 2h15; ~48 km from Beiuș, about an hour). From Alba and Cluj you come up the Arieș valley via Câmpeni and Arieșeni: ~48 km from Câmpeni (about an hour), ~9 km from Arieșeni. From Cluj-Napoca and Alba Iulia it is ~120–130 km, about 2h30–3h. The road is paved, with hairpins on both sides.
Public transport: minibuses run up the Arieș valley between Câmpeni and Arieșeni, and on the Bihor side there are connections to Ștei and Nucet; we could not confirm regular services right up to the pass. In practice you get there by car.
- Where to park
Where the trail to Groapa Ruginoasă starts, on the last tight bend of the DN75 before Vârtop on the Bihor side, there is a small free car park. At the foot of the Piatra Grăitoare chairlift there is a car park of about 100 spaces with an automatic barrier (the charge is not published); guesthouses have spaces for guests. On winter weekends the resort's spaces fill up quickly; do not park on the DN75 carriageway.
- Fees & discounts
The road is public and free, with no toll. The road vignette (rovinieta) is compulsory on the DN75 outside built-up areas. The Piatra Grăitoare chairlift, run by Nucet town council, charges separately, with tickets sold online and at the ticket office.
- Rules
In winter drive only on winter tyres and allow for temporary closures after heavy snow or avalanches. Do not stop on the carriageway for photos, only in the wider spots. On the trails from the pass stay on the waymarked routes, with walking boots and rain gear; in winter deep snow makes the routes longer and harder to follow. At Groapa Ruginoasă keep away from the edge of the ravine, which is actively collapsing.
- Facilities
Guesthouses, chalets and restaurants in the Vârtop holiday village · ski slopes with chairlift and drag lifts · Salvamont mountain rescue post in the resort · waymarked trails to Groapa Ruginoasă, Piatra Grăitoare and Padiș
