About Vârciorog Waterfall
Vârciorog Waterfall is the most visited waterfall around Arieșeni, in the south-east of the Bihor Mountains. The Vârciorog stream, a small tributary of the Arieșul Mare, drops here over a rock step of about 15 m in a single leap, and has carved a hollow at its foot where the water calms down before carrying on downhill. The waterfall lies at roughly 1,090 m, at the foot of Piatra Grăitoare peak, within the bounds of the village of Vanvucești.
Since 2000 the waterfall and its surroundings, covering 5 hectares, have been a geological and landscape nature reserve, inside the Apuseni Natural Park. It is ringed by spruce and fir, and the valley leading up to it is shaded almost all the way, so it makes a pleasant walk even on hot days.
The flow depends a lot on the season: in spring, at snowmelt, the fall is white and loud and snowdrops and crocuses bloom along the valley; in summer and autumn the water thins out, but the forest has wild strawberries, bilberries and raspberries. In winter the waterfall freezes, and with little snow the valley stays walkable.
What you can see
The route follows the Vârciorog valley on a forest track that crosses the stream several times over footbridges and fords. Near the end you pass a large spoil heap left by old mining works, and the waterfall appears at the head of the valley, between two moss-covered rock walls. You can go down to its foot, where the spray carries a long way on days with plenty of water.
Those keen on a climb can carry on along a steep, unmarked path behind the waterfall, through forest and then pasture, to Piatra Grăitoare, the rock on the ridge known for its echo.
Good to know
The route is easy, but in places the track is very muddy, because water running off the slope flows right down the middle of it, and the last few hundred metres cross wet stones. Wear shoes with good grip that do not soak through easily.
