About Băile Cojocna
Băile Cojocna is a spa lido on the edge of the village of Cojocna, 24 km from Cluj-Napoca, laid out around two salt lakes. It is not a salt mine you can visit underground: the lakes formed where bell-shaped salt pits caved in after they were abandoned and filled with water. What you visit today is the salt water on the surface, in which you float almost without effort.
Salt was already mined here in Roman times, and the pits worked, on and off, until 1852. A few decades later, people from Cluj began bathing in the salty ponds left behind, and the villagers took out loans to build the baths around the turn of the 20th century. The complex still belongs to the commune and is run by its company, Băi Cojocna SRL. The banks and wooden decks were rebuilt with EU funding in 2010.
What you can see
Lake Durgău (Toroc) is the oldest and deepest, at more than 40 m, and next to it is the lido's smaller lake, which the operator calls Lake I, about 12–13 m deep. The water holds around 110 g of salt per litre, and the lakes are heliothermal: in summer the layers below the surface warm up in the sun and stay warm. Around them are beaches, wooden decks and steps into the water, tennis and football pitches and a campsite. A separate building houses an indoor pool of heated salt water, a sauna, a salt room and a rehabilitation centre.
Good to know
The lakes open only in summer: in 2026, from 1 June to 15 September. The warm pool also runs out of season. The commune and Cluj County Council are preparing a project to expand the treatment centre and want the village to become a spa resort; for now Cojocna is not on the list of officially recognised tourist resorts.
