About Ocna Mureș Salt Baths
Ocna Mureș sits on a salt dome that comes almost to the surface in the town centre and has been worked since Antiquity. Salt was mined systematically underground from 1791 until 1978, when the last mine, 1 Mai, was flooded by a lake that had formed above an older collapsed mine. Decades of extracting salt as brine through boreholes followed, and in December 2010 a collapse swallowed buildings in the centre and left a new lake behind.
Alongside the salt works, a salt-bath resort operated from 1876 and was officially recognised in 1889; people came here above all for rheumatism. The old bath building declined after 1990 and was demolished in 2011. The town and Alba County Council built a new complex in its place, the Ocna Mureș Salt Baths treatment and leisure centre, opened in May 2023 and run by a company owned by the town. The water it uses is a very strong brine, with more than 300 g of salt per litre.
What you can see
The main building has three heated pools: a large salt-water pool, a large fresh-water pool, both at 32–34 °C, and a salt-water treatment pool at 36–38 °C. There are also four jacuzzis, a steam room and a dry sauna, and a halotherapy room lined with salt, which the complex calls "the salt mine". In summer the outdoor pools open as well: an unheated fresh-water swimming pool almost 50 m long, a salt-water pool at 28–30 °C and two round children's pools. There is also a gym, sports pitches, treatment and rehabilitation rooms, a restaurant and a bar.
Good to know
There is no underground access. The salt mines of Ocna Mureș are flooded or backfilled and cannot be visited, and the salt lakes that formed above them are in a fenced-off area with no visitor facilities. Some websites describe underground galleries open to visitors and a church carved in salt at Ocna Mureș, but these do not exist. All you can visit today is the spa complex above ground.
