About Băile Govora
Băile Govora is a small spa town in Vâlcea County, set at 360–380 m in a sub-Carpathian basin ringed by hills of beech and oak forest, about 20 km from Râmnicu Vâlcea. Its waters are among the richest in iodine and bromine in Europe: strongly concentrated iodine, bromine, sulphur and sodium chloride mineral waters used for baths and inhalations, alongside more lightly mineralised springs for drinking cures. The resort is best known for treating respiratory conditions and rheumatism.
The springs were found in the 1870s, during a search for oil, and the first bathhouse went up in 1887. The golden age came after 1909, when the resort was leased to a company that brought in the French architect Ernest Doneaud: he designed the Palace Hotel, finished in 1914, and the Bath Pavilion, opened in 1915, while the landscape architect Émile Pinard, creator of Romanescu Park in Craiova, redesigned the central park. In 1928–1929 a casino was added, designed by Virginia Andreescu-Haret, Romania's first woman architect.
What you can see
Entry to the resort is free. Everything is gathered around the spa park, with shady paths, gazebos, busts of the resort's doctors and of several writers, and the Ferdinand spring, with sulphurous mineral water, on the bank of the Hința stream. On the edge of the park stands the Palace Hotel, a listed monument with an eclectic façade, restored in 2013 and now a four-star hotel with a treatment centre and spa. The former casino is now a cultural centre, and in the centre, in a period villa, the "Gheorghe Petre" Museum of Archaeology and Religious Art holds more than 4,000 pieces, from mammoth fossils to Bronze Age pottery, old books and icons painted on wood and glass.
Good to know
The Bath Pavilion, Doneaud's masterpiece, has been closed for many years and is badly decayed: the plaster has fallen away, the doors and windows are gone and the turreted roof is close to collapse. You can only see it from outside. Many of the period villas around the park are also empty or crumbling. In 2025 the National Commission for Historic Monuments called for the park and the pavilion to be listed as a matter of urgency, but as of November 2025 the local authorities had not yet started the procedure. Govora Monastery, a few kilometres away, belongs to another commune and is a separate attraction.

Good to know before you go
- Getting there
By car: from Râmnicu Vâlcea it is ~22 km, about 35 minutes: along the DN 67 towards Horezu and Târgu Jiu for some 17 km, then left onto the DJ 649, which climbs through Govora to the centre of the resort. From Craiova it is ~100 km (~2h15, on the DN 64 via Drăgășani), from Sibiu ~140 km (~2h45, on the A1 and through the Olt Valley), from Târgu Jiu ~90 km (~1h50, on the DN 67), from Bucharest ~200 km (~3h, on the A1 and the DN 73C).
Public transport: minibuses and buses run daily between Râmnicu Vâlcea and Băile Govora, around 15 a day each way, from morning until evening, leaving from the Ferdinand bus station; the ride takes 25–40 minutes. Govora railway station, on the Piatra Olt – Râmnicu Vâlcea line, lies outside the resort, so the bus from Râmnicu Vâlcea is the simpler option.
- Where to park
The resort has small surface car parks in the centre: by the spa park, on Strada Parcului, and near the town hall, on Strada Tudor Vladimirescu; we found no charges published by the town hall. The Palace and Parc hotels have parking for guests. From the centre it is a few minutes' walk through the park to the Palace Hotel and the Ferdinand spring.
- Fees & discounts
Walking through the resort and the spa park is free. Treatments are given at the centres of the hotels and a few villas: Palace, Parc, Oltenia, Belvedere, Vila Lili, Vila Crizantema and the RecMed centre. The Hotel Parc treatment centre also takes outpatients; for guests staying without a treatment voucher or medical papers, the spa cure with a consultation costs ~120 lei a day per person. At the Palace Hotel spa, therapies start at ~100 lei (a 15-minute hydromassage) and ~110 lei (a 25-minute partial massage). The "Gheorghe Petre" museum does not publish its ticket price on the county museum's website. Prices checked in September 2026.
- Rules
Spa treatments are given only after a consultation with the spa doctor at the treatment centre, as some procedures have contraindications; the Palace Hotel spa works by appointment, and cancelling less than 24 hours ahead costs half the price. The Bath Pavilion and the abandoned villas are decaying buildings: look at them from the path and do not go inside.
