About Vatra Dornei
Vatra Dornei is Bukovina's spa resort: a small town at around 800 m above sea level, in the Dorna Depression, ringed by the Călimani, Suhard and Giumalău mountains. Treatments are based on cold carbonated mineral waters, rich in iron and lightly bicarbonated, on peat mud brought from Poiana Stampei and on mofettes that release carbon dioxide, all helped along by the mountain air. The resort specialises in cardiovascular and rheumatic conditions.
The springs were first analysed scientifically in 1805 by Dr Ignatziu Plusch, and in 1811 the Austrian administration approved the first bath house, with six tubs. From 1870 the baths belonged to the Orthodox Church Fund of Bukovina, which turned them into a resort of European standing: between 1896 and 1898 it built the pavilions of the Sentinela and Unirea springs, the Carol Hotel and the Spa Casino, in a town that had had electric light since 1895.
What you can see
The heart of the resort is the spa park, about ten hectares laid out from the middle of the 19th century on the bank of the Dorna, with tall firs and known for its squirrels. On its edge stands the Spa Casino, an eclectic Neo-Renaissance building designed by Peter Paul Brang and inaugurated in 1899. After decades as a ruin it was restored with EU funds and reopened in November 2023 as a museum centre: you can see the central hall, with its gallery and chandeliers, the brick hall and the vaulted hall in the basement, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Behind the casino is the pavilion of the Sentinela Spring, a white crenellated tower of 1896 and a listed monument.
Treatments are given at the hotels' treatment centres, the largest being the Bradul–Călimani centre, with carbonated baths, a natural mofette and peat wraps. From the Negrești district a three-kilometre chairlift climbs Dealu Negru to around 1,300 m, where in winter there is a ski run of about three kilometres.
Good to know
The spa park and the Sentinela Spring building are part of an EU-funded restoration project signed in February 2026 and scheduled to run until 2029: the paths, pavilions and lighting are being redone, and the spring will become a source of drinking water for locals and visitors. While the work is under way, parts of the park and the spring pavilion may be closed.
