About Heroes' Cross on Caraiman Peak
Best known as the Caraiman Cross or the Heroes' Cross (Crucea Eroilor Neamului), and officially as the Commemorative Cross to the Romanian Heroes of the First World War, the cross stands on a rocky spur of Mount Caraiman at 2,291 m, right above the drop of more than 1,000 m into the Seacă valley. It was raised in memory of the Romanian soldiers who fell in autumn 1916 in the fighting for the Predeal pass, along the Prahova Valley and on the Bucegi ridges, where historians estimate that around 30,000 men died.
The work is usually dated 1926–1928, although some research puts the start of construction in 1924. Tradition credits the initiative to King Ferdinand and Queen Marie; more recent research has found no documents to confirm this and points to a committee of Bușteni residents. What is certain is that the structure was built by the bridges department of the Romanian Railways, from riveted steel sections, and that the materials went up the roadless mountain on the Bușteni paper mill's cableway and then on horses and donkeys. The monument is 39.3 m tall, almost 8 m of which is the stone-clad concrete pedestal; each arm is 7 m long. In 2013 Guinness World Records certified it as the tallest summit cross in the world.
Between 2018 and 2021 the Ministry of Defence restored the cross with EU funds: the structure was cleaned and repainted, LED lighting was fitted, and a small exhibition space about the war and the building of the monument was set up inside the pedestal. The cross is a listed historic monument and lies within Bucegi Natural Park.
What you can see
Up close, the most striking sight is the lattice of riveted girders rising above you, with the stone pedestal and the square platform fenced with posts and chains. From the edge of the platform you look almost straight down on Bușteni and the Prahova Valley, with the Baiu Mountains opposite; to the north rises Coștila, with its relay mast. To the west stretches the Bucegi plateau, the way you came from Babele and the Sphinx. In the evening the cross is lit up and can be seen from the town, in the colours of the national flag on national holidays.
Good to know
You are at almost 2,300 m, on the edge of a cliff with no railing beyond the platform: in fog and wind, keep away from the edge. The weather changes quickly, and the trails from Bușteni are hard and close in winter. The exhibition space inside the pedestal has no published opening hours.

- The lattice of riveted steel girders, seen from the foot of the stone pedestal.
- The cross lit up at night, seen from Bușteni after you have been up there by day.
- The walk across the plateau from Babele, with the Sphinx and Babele as stops on the way out or back.
Good to know before you go
- Getting there
By cable car: the easiest way up is the Bușteni–Babele cable car, which climbs more than 1,200 m in about a quarter of an hour. From the top station walk across the plateau on the path waymarked with a red cross, 1–1.5 hours (up to 2 hours at an easy pace) to the Cross; the path has no technical difficulties, just short climbs. On the way back you can pass by the Sphinx. You can also come up from the other side, on the cable car from Peștera to Babele.
By car: Bușteni is ~135 km from Bucharest, on the DN1 via Ploiești and Sinaia, and ~45 km from Brașov, via Predeal. On the plateau, the nearest you can get by car is the Transbucegi (DJ713), from the DN71 near Sinaia to the barrier near Piatra Arsă; from there walk about an hour along the road closed to cars (yellow stripe) to Babele and then follow the red cross to the Cross, ~2–2.5 hours in all. The upper section of the Transbucegi is closed in winter.
On foot from Bușteni: the Jepii Mici valley trail (blue cross) starts near the cable car and climbs in 3.5–4 hours to the Caraiman chalet; it is steep, with exposed stretches secured with chains, only for experienced hikers and closed in winter. From the chalet it is about another hour to the Cross along the Brâna Mare a Caraimanului ledge (blue dot), a narrow path cut into the side of the cliff, hard going for anyone with a fear of heights; the easier option is to carry on from the chalet towards Babele and follow the red cross from there. You can go down by cable car.
Public transport: Bucharest–Brașov trains stop at Bușteni station; from there it is ~2 km to the lower cable car station.
- Where to park
You cannot drive to the Cross. If you take the cable car, park in Bușteni around the lower station, where there are several car parks, some of them paid; on summer weekends they fill up early, and so does the queue for the cable car. If you come via the Transbucegi, leave the car at the end of the tarmac, by the barrier at Piatra Arsă, or at the Piatra Arsă chalet.
- Fees & discounts
There is no entry ticket for the Cross. Visiting Bucegi Natural Park costs 10 lei per person (from age 14), with a ticket valid for 3 months, bought online or in cash from the rangers; it is not included in the cable car ticket. Bușteni–Babele cable car (2026 fares): single ascent or descent 105 lei, return 199 lei; children aged 5–12 pay 49 lei each way and 85 lei return; children under 5 travel free.
- Rules
You are in Bucegi Natural Park: leave no litter, do not light fires, do not camp outside the signposted sites and stick to the waymarked paths. Do not climb the pedestal or go past the platform chains towards the cliff. In fog, the plateau between Babele and the Cross is easy to lose your way on: carry a map or GPS. Bring warm and waterproof clothing even in summer and hiking boots for any trail; on the Jepii valley and the Caraiman ledge, start early. Mountain rescue: 0SALVAMONT (0725 826 668) or 112.
- Facilities
no facilities at the Cross · bar at the top cable car station · Caraiman chalet, below the Cross, with bar and food · patchy mobile signal
