For three centuries, Bánffy Castle in Bonțida was the largest aristocratic residence in Transylvania, which earned it the nickname "the Versailles of Transylvania". The estate came to the Bánffy family in 1387 as a gift from King Sigismund of Luxembourg, and today's castle took shape in three stages: the Renaissance enclosure with round corner towers, built by Dénes Bánffy between 1668 and 1674; the Baroque rebuilding of 1747–1751, with a U-shaped cour d'honneur and a gallery of mythological statues carved by Johannes Nachtigall; and the west wing remodelled in neo-Gothic style by architect Anton Kagerbauer in 1855.
The last master of the house was Count Miklós Bánffy, writer and politician. In 1944, retreating German troops looted and burned the castle, and decades as a collective farm office and warehouse brought it to the brink of ruin. Since 2001 the Transylvania Trust Foundation has been restoring it step by step through a built heritage conservation training site, which won a Europa Nostra award in 2008. Since 2013 the courtyard and park have hosted the Electric Castle festival every summer.
What you can see
You enter through the gate building, home to the lapidarium: over fifty fragments of Baroque statues recovered during restoration. Next comes the cour d'honneur, framed by the stables with their rebuilt brick vaults, the former chapel and the main building. In the west wing, behind the neo-Gothic façade, five rooms hold an interactive exhibition on the life of Miklós Bánffy; upstairs, a photography exhibition recalls Countess Katalin Bánffy, the last owner. The former kitchen tower, the first building to be restored, has the café on the ground floor. Beyond the buildings stretch the meadow with a playground and the lake that mirrors the towers.
Good to know
Restoration is ongoing and will take many more years: some buildings and rooms are still closed, and you will see scaffolding and building work around them. In July, around the Electric Castle festival, the castle closes to the public for two to four weeks.
