Bánffy Castle in Nușfalău
About Bánffy Castle in Nușfalău
On the edge of the village of Nușfalău, in Sălaj County, stands the late Baroque residence of the Bánffy and Wesselényi families. The Bánffys held land here as early as the 15th century, and the present two-storey building replaced the old fortified manor at the end of the 18th or the start of the 19th century. The exact date is unknown; the gate bears the coats of arms of the married couple György Bánffy and Zsuzsanna Wesselényi, who wed in 1764 — a griffin with a sword and a mermaid. Its present form, with the columned entrance, comes from a rebuilding in 1925.
In 1936 Albert Bánffy sold the castle to the Reformed parish. After nationalisation in 1948 it served as a culture house and cinema, then as a clinic and maternity unit, and finally as a school and home for children with disabilities. The parish recovered it in 2008 but found funding for restoration only in 2023, through the România Atractivă programme (PNRR), topped up by a contribution from the Hungarian government. The works ran from 2025 to August 2026, and the castle opened officially in September 2026.
What you can see
The building has a basement, ground floor and upper floor, covering about 600 square metres. In the cellar is a viticulture exhibition with old tools. The ground floor holds an ethnography exhibition, with objects over a century old donated by villagers, a room on the life of the Bánffy family with a piano and a desk, and a photo exhibition on the restoration. Upstairs are an exhibition on the poet János Arany, whose grandparents lived in the commune, a painting exhibition, works by a local craft circle and a large ceremonial hall.
Good to know
The castle belongs to the Reformed parish and works as a church, cultural and tourist centre; services, conferences and events are also held in the hall. The Arany János Days take place here in October.
