The first church on the site was a small one with a single tower, whose foundation stone was laid in 1786 on a plot in the town, to replace the old parish church in the fortress, which had fallen into ruin. In 1804, when the Diocese of Satu Mare was founded, it was raised to cathedral rank, but it was becoming ever too small. Bishop János Hám decided to turn it into a church worthy of the diocese. The plans are usually attributed to the architect József Hild, though the diocese's own website says that the attribution has recently been disputed.
The work lasted from 1830 to 1837: the old tower was pulled down, and the building gained its dome, the two side aisles, the two towers and the portico at the entrance. In 1834 an earthquake cracked the walls, the church was closed and repaired for three years, and the bishop consecrated it on 20 August 1837. Outside it is classicist, with the monumental calm of an ancient building; inside, several Baroque features have survived. It is the largest Roman Catholic church in the city, the diocese's cathedral and one of the buildings that give the square its face.
What you can see
The façade has a portico of six columns with Corinthian capitals, beneath a pediment with an allegory of Faith; above it, on the attic, stand statues of the Saviour, St Peter and St Paul, and in niches in the towers, of Kings Stephen and Ladislaus. Each of the two towers ends in a small dome with a wrought-iron balcony.
The nave has three aisles. The great dome is painted with "Jesus at Twelve in the Temple" (János Riedler, 1836); the classicist high altar, of Carrara marble, is a work of 1905 by Félix Tomán, with the painting "The Ascension of the Lord", painted in 1837 by a member of the Pesky family. In the right-hand aisle is the tomb of Blessed János Scheffler, the martyr bishop beatified in 2011, with a memorial room beside it; Hám's coffin lies at the left-hand side altar. The organ fills the gallery above the entrance. Beneath the altar is the bishops' crypt.
Good to know
This is the diocese's working cathedral, with daily Masses, and services come first. The Meszlényi Gyula Church Art Collection (paintings, liturgical objects, vestments), open since 2008, is in five small rooms in the old sacristy, entered from the left side of the church; I did not find its hours published. The major rehabilitation works, funded by the EU and by the Romanian and Hungarian governments, were completed in 2021: the tin roof was rebuilt in copper, the stone and metal elements were restored and the floor was replaced.
