Buzău Land UNESCO Global Geopark
About Buzău Land UNESCO Global Geopark
Buzău Land (Ținutul Buzăului) covers about 1,036 km² of the Carpathian bend, where the hills meet the mountains, and takes in the whole of 18 rural communes in the north of Buzău County, home to roughly 43,000 people. The initiative began in 2007 as a partnership between Buzău County Council and the University of Bucharest, and since 2017 the geopark has been run by the Ținutul Buzăului Association. In April 2022 it became a UNESCO Global Geopark, the second in Romania after Hațeg Country, and in 2025 the status was revalidated for four more years with a “green card”. It is a programme separate from World Heritage: a lived-in territory, not a closed reserve.
The rocks span more than 70 million years, from the floor of a deep sea to deltas, lagoons and mountains. The result is a cluster of rare phenomena in a small area: gas burning at the surface, salt pushing out of the hills, sands cemented into strange shapes, petrified volcanic ash and the largest amber deposits in the country, including red rumanite.
What you can see
The geopark's visitor sites are spread across three valleys. In the Slănic Valley, the Focul Viu (Living Fire) at Terca (Lopătari) burns on methane rising from more than 3 km down, and the Meledic Plateau has exposed salt, salt caves and the Sărat Canyon. In the Bălăneasa Valley, the Ulmet trovants (the Babele, in Bozioru) have been a protected area since 2018, and from Nucu a path of about 4 hours there and back leads to the rock-cut hermitages of Poiana Coziancei; more cells carved into the rock are at Aluniș. In the Sibiciu Valley, the Amber Museum in Colți presents the old mines and rumanite. As an introduction, the GeoGate visitor centre in Sătuc, on the DN10, uses augmented and virtual reality, as does Povestea Trovanților (The Trovants' Story) in Bozioru, opened in 2025. The Berca mud volcanoes are covered separately.
Good to know
The geopark is not a resort: many sites lie at the end of a local road or cart track and are reached on foot. A car with high ground clearance helps.
Information verified on 21 October 2026.
- The Focul Viu at Terca, in Lopătari commune, where methane seeping from the ground burns almost without pause on the hillside.
- The Ulmet trovants, oddly shaped sandstone boulders left from a prehistoric delta, with their story told at the centre in Bozioru.
- The Meledic Plateau, with salt at the surface, salt caves and the white walls of the Sărat Canyon.
- The Amber Museum in Colți, with red rumanite and the history of the amber mines of the early 20th century.
- The rock-cut hermitages of Poiana Coziancei and Aluniș, cells and small churches carved into the rock and once lived in by monks.

- Rules
Several sites are protected areas (the Ulmet trovants, the Focul Viu, the Colți amber reserve, Natura 2000 sites): do not take stones, trovants, amber or fossils and do not leave litter. Stay on the marked paths and wear boots, not sandals. There are many sheepfolds: with sheepdogs, wait calmly, do not run or move forward, and call the shepherd. Bears, wolves and wild boar live in the forests, so walk in a group and talk. Cars stay on the county roads, not on cart tracks.
