The building on Liberty Square was conceived at the end of the 19th century as a hotel worthy of a fast-growing town. The idea came up in 1897, under mayor Hermán Mihály, and the design competition drew 11 entries. In January 1898 the town council chose the project of the Budapest architects Zoltán Bálint and Lajos Jámbor (Frommer), pupils of Ödön Lechner. The old building on the site was demolished in 1900, the foundation stone was laid in 1901, and the hotel, named Pannonia, was inaugurated in 1902.
The façade is Hungarian Secession, with floral decoration inspired by folk art, glazed ceramic medallions, a central turret and a roof of blue ceramic tiles. Inside there were three large rooms: the café, the restaurant and the ballroom. After 1918 the hotel became the Dacia; in 1940–1944 it bore the name Pannonia again, then Dacia once more. Its guests included Nicolae Iorga, Mihail Sadoveanu, Liviu Rebreanu and Octavian Goga. After privatisation in 1995 and a buyer who never managed to renovate it, the building decayed for years, until Hungarian investors took it over in 2018–2020.
What you can see
Today you can only see the façade, from the square: its restoration was completed in 2025, while the interior is a building site. Look for the turret on the roof, the gables with plant ornaments and the arcades on the ground floor. The park and fountain in front of the building make Liberty Square a pleasant place to stop.
Good to know
The hotel is not open to visitors. Since autumn 2023 it has been under restoration, at a cost of around 30 million euros, and the building will become a hotel again, with 62 rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a spa, under the Hotel Indigo brand (IHG), run by the Hungarian group Hotel & More. The opening date has been postponed several times: at the end of August 2026 the county culture directorate announced the second half of 2027.
