The Vasile Pârvan Museum was founded on 10 April 1914 on the initiative of a group of Bârlad intellectuals led by Professor Stroe Belloescu, under the name Tutova County Museum. It has carried its present name since 1957, in honour of the historian and archaeologist born in the area. Since the same year its headquarters has been the Palace on Vasile Pârvan Street, a nineteenth-century neoclassical building that was the prefecture of Tutova County, designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Baldorossi, restored with European funds between 2010 and 2012 and listed as a historic monument.
The museum is mixed and spread over several buildings in town. The Palace holds the History-Archaeology and Art sections; the building on Republicii Street has the exhibitions on Bârlad's notable figures, natural sciences and the astronomical observatory; Sturdza House, built between 1796 and 1812, shows two contemporary art collections; and the "Marcel Guguianu" Pavilion houses the work of the sculptor of that name and the planetarium.
What you can see
In the Palace, the History-Archaeology section runs from the Palaeolithic to the modern era, with archaeological finds, coins, documents and old books; above it, the Art section gathers mostly donated collections, with works by Nicolae Tonitza, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ștefan Luchian and Theodor Pallady, Oriental art and sculpture. At the Republicii Street building you can see the exhibitions "Bârladul cultural" and "Flora and fauna of Vaslui County", and on the top floor the astronomical observatory, with telescopes for observing together with the public. The planetarium, the only digital one in the county, screens shows about the sky and the universe.

The museum has several sites with separate tickets (plus one ticket for all the exhibitions); decide beforehand what you want to see. The observatory and planetarium are visited by telephone booking.
