About Anghel Saligny Bridge at Fetești

The bridge at Fetești is the Wallachian end of the bridge complex Anghel Saligny built between 1890 and 1895 to link Bucharest and Constanța across the Borcea branch and the Danube. With the viaduct across Balta Ialomiței and the approach ramps, the complex measured 4,088 m and, at its inauguration on 26 September 1895, was the longest in Romania. The 190 m central span, at Cernavodă, was the largest in continental Europe.

The bridge over the Borcea has three spans of 140 m each, followed by a viaduct with 11 spans of 50 m, some 970 m in all. It is no longer exactly the one of 1895, though: in October 1916, in retreat, Romanian troops destroyed it, and in 1921 a new superstructure, designed and built by Romanian specialists, was mounted on the piers that had survived. The masonry piers are therefore the original ones. The ensemble "The bridges between Fetești and Cernavodă – Anghel Saligny" is a listed historic monument (LMI code IL-II-a-A-14114).

In 1986–1987 a new combined bridge, with a double railway track and the Autostrada Soarelui (A2), came into use alongside. The old bridge stayed next to it as a second railway crossing; while the new bridges were being repaired, in 2014–2018, it was made ready to take the trains.

Don't miss
  • Steel truss superstructures on masonry piers in the bed of the Borcea.
  • The old bridge beside the new one of 1986–1987, two eras of engineering side by side.
  • The piers of 1895, on which the superstructure rebuilt after the destruction of 1916 was mounted in 1921.
  • A listed monument (IL-II-a-A-14114) from the Fetești–Cernavodă complex designed by Anghel Saligny.
