About Șuior
Șuior is a mountain resort and ski area in Maramureș, in the Gutâi Mountains, on the northern slope of Mogoșa Peak (1,246 m), within the town of Baia Sprie, about 18 km from Baia Mare. The resort grew up on the site of former school camps that ran here for almost four decades, and the Șuior–Baia Sprie area is recognised by the Government as a tourist resort of local interest.
The resort has two levels: the Base, at 668 m, with the hotels, restaurants and the chairlift station, and Cota 1000, at 1,000 m, with wooden chalets and a lake, reached by chairlift or by 4x4. In winter Șuior is a ski destination close to Baia Mare, well suited to families; in summer the chairlift carries cyclists and hikers up to Cota 1000.
What you can see
The slopes run down through the forest from Cota 1000 to the base: Șuior 1, 1,500 m long, and Șuior 2, 1,200 m long, both of medium difficulty, plus two shorter runs, one of them difficult, and a beginners' slope. Also listed are the difficult Moski run, 600 m long, and the difficult Mogoșa run, 2,200 m long, which is marked as closed. In all there are about 3.6 km of slopes between 668 and 1,000 m, served by one chairlift, with snowmaking along their whole length and a 1,500 m slope floodlit for evening skiing.
At Cota 1000, a fun park has a 130 m beginners' slope with a conveyor belt, two tubing runs and a jump with a landing on a giant inflatable airbag; in summer the tubing and the jump stay open. The bike park has three downhill and enduro trails starting from Cota 1000, the easiest 2 km long with a 332 m drop. Waymarked trails lead from the resort to Mogoșa Peak and to the Gutâi ridge, with Creasta Cocoșului (1,394 m) and Gutâi Peak (1,443 m). Nearby, on the same massif, lies Lake Mogoșa, a reservoir with a path along its shore.
Good to know
The slopes open depending on snow and weather, so not all of them run on the same day. Cota 1000 cannot be reached by ordinary car: access is only by chairlift or by 4x4.
