Băile Bazna
About Băile Bazna
Băile Bazna (Bázna in Hungarian, Baaßen in German) is an old spa resort in the north of Sibiu county, in a valley of hills covered in forests and orchards, about 2 km from the centre of the village of Bazna, where a Saxon fortified church stands. It lies at an altitude of around 320 m. Its salty, iodine- and bromine-rich waters, sapropelic mud and the salt obtained from the spring water made it known as early as the 18th century.
The first bathing establishment was built in 1843 by a joint-stock company from Mediaș, and by 1845 637 people had come for treatment. In 1877 the baths were leased to a businessman from Mediaș, in 1905 the resort gained its first doctor and a pharmacy and began producing “Victoria” salt, and from 1950, after passing to the Ministry of Health, it operated all year round. Since 2000 the salt water has also been used at the Expro spa complex.
What you can see
The deposit waters are drawn from 15 wells and are sodium-chloride waters with a mineralisation of about 100 g/l. At the Expro spa complex, in the north-east of the resort, the treatment centre has 120 places: a mineral-water pool, bathtub baths, sapropelic mud wraps, hydrotherapy, kinesiotherapy and electrotherapy. Outdoors there are a salt-water pool, a fresh-water pool and a children's pool with a water slide.
The resort park covers about 20 hectares, with conifers and broadleaf trees, and is the main place for a stroll. Around it are the buildings of the old thermal complex: promenades, villas and baths from the 19th and 20th centuries, and buildings from the communist period, such as the glass-fronted canteen-club.
Good to know
The old thermal complex is largely abandoned and the buildings are in an advanced state of decay: they are viewed from the outside. Salt-water baths and mud wraps are now taken at the Expro complex.
