About Ocna Mureș Salt Baths

At a glance: Resorts and thermal baths in Ocna Mureș, Alba County. Opening hours: Monday 12:00 – 21:00, Tuesday–Sunday 09:00 – 21:00. Ticket: 80 lei. The visit takes 3½ – 4 hours. Information verified on 29 September 2026.

Ocna Mureș sits on a salt dome that comes almost to the surface in the town centre and has been worked since Antiquity. Salt was mined systematically underground from 1791 until 1978, when the last mine, 1 Mai, was flooded by a lake that had formed above an older collapsed mine. Decades of extracting salt as brine through boreholes followed, and in December 2010 a collapse swallowed buildings in the centre and left a new lake behind.

Alongside the salt works, a salt-bath resort operated from 1876 and was officially recognised in 1889; people came here above all for rheumatism. The old bath building declined after 1990 and was demolished in 2011. The town and Alba County Council built a new complex in its place, the Ocna Mureș Salt Baths treatment and leisure centre, opened in May 2023 and run by a company owned by the town. The water it uses is a very strong brine, with more than 300 g of salt per litre.

Don't miss
  • The salt-water treatment pool, heated to 36–38 °C and filled with brine of more than 300 g of salt per litre.
  • The large indoor salt-water pool, in the hall with glass walls looking onto the grounds.
  • In summer, the almost 50 m outdoor swimming pool with the wooded hill behind it.
  • The halotherapy room lined with Ocna Mureș salt, which the complex calls "the salt mine".
