About Drapers' Bastion

The Drapers' Bastion guards the north-eastern corner of Brașov's medieval walled town, below the slope of Mount Tâmpa. Between 1450 and 1455 it was built and defended by the goldsmiths' guild, equipped with bombards brought from Prague, small cannons and arquebuses. In the 17th century its defence passed to the guild of cloth makers (sources give 1640 or 1646), from which the name comes; some texts also call it the Linen Weavers' Bastion. The walls were repaired in 1521–1522, consolidated in 1961–1962 and restored in the 2000s.

It has an elliptical plan, with a diameter of about 16 m and a height of about 20 m, and in the Middle Ages it was organised on four levels of timber galleries. Unlike the Weavers' Bastion, which is a museum with opening hours, this one cannot currently be visited inside.

Information verified on 13 October 2026.

Don't miss
  • The elliptical tower, about 20 m high, with loopholes and gunports visible in the outer wall.
  • The curtain wall that starts at the bastion and runs down towards the historic centre, along the promenade below Tâmpa.
  • The view over Brașov's rooftops from the path next to the bastion.
