About Batthyaneum Library

The Batthyaneum Library, the Alba Iulia branch of the National Library of Romania, stands in the Alba Carolina Fortress, on Strada Gabriel Bethlen. The building is the former church of the Trinitarian monastery, raised in the Baroque style in the first half of the 18th century. The monastery was dissolved in 1784, during the reforms of Emperor Joseph II, and Ignațiu Batthyány, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Transylvania, bought the building and from 1792 converted it to hold a library, an astronomical observatory and a diocesan printing press. The library was founded by a deed signed on 31 July 1798, with open access for anyone who wished to use it.

The bishop's founding collection numbered about 18,000 items. Today the library holds over 50,000 books, 19,000 documents, 1,230 manuscripts and almost 600 incunabula. Among the oldest pieces are the 1488 edition of Homer, Livy's Roman History, the Palia de la Orăștie (1582) and a fragment of the Codex Aureus, a 9th-century gospel book, containing the Gospels of Matthew and Mark. In 1843 the teachers of the town's Roman Catholic lyceum began recording weather data here as well, and the Batthyaneum observatory became the first weather station on the present-day territory of Romania.

Information verified on 29 October 2026.
