Agnita Fortified Church
About Agnita Fortified Church
In the centre of Agnita (Agnetheln to the Saxons), in the Hârtibaci Valley, a tall Evangelical church with a bell tower over 40 m high is surrounded by white guild towers. In the 13th century the site had a Romanesque basilica without a tower, dedicated to Saint Agatha; more than two centuries later the community strengthened it, raised the side aisles to the height of the central one, turning it into a hall church, and surrounded it with walls and towers. In 1466 King Matthias Corvinus granted Agnita the right to pass death sentences by the sword, a sign of the town's importance on the border of Transylvania.
Only a fragment of the defensive ring wall remains, on the south side; the rest was demolished. The towers have survived instead: the western bell tower, also called the potters' tower, with a wooden wall-walk, the gate tower, the coopers' tower, and the tailors', blacksmiths' and shoemakers' towers, each once maintained by the guild whose name it bears. The ensemble was rehabilitated under a European project between 2014 and 2020, and the towers now house a museum exhibition.
What you can see
The ensemble is best taken in from the square in front of the church: the gate in the coopers' tower, the towers with their timber-framed eaves and, behind them, the bell tower with its clock. The towers can be visited, and the ticket also covers the exhibition in them.
In the church, the eye is drawn to the winged altarpiece of 1650, a work that continues the tradition of pre-Reformation Gothic altarpieces, and to the cross vaults of the elongated choir. The church holds an organ of 1850, made in Brașov, and in the north aisle a winter chapel with an altar of 1741 brought from Zied.
Good to know
The town is also linked to the Sibiu–Agnita narrow-gauge steam train, restored by an association of volunteers. This is not the church in Ruja, a village belonging to Agnita, which has a different fortified church.
