About Axente Sever Fortified Church

At a glance: Monasteries and churches in Axente Sever, Sibiu County. The visit takes 45 min. Information verified on 10 October 2026.

Axente Sever, a village on the Târnava Plateau on the DN14 between Mediaș and Sibiu, was called Frâua (Frauendorf to the Saxons) until 1931. The Lutheran church, dedicated to All Saints, is first mentioned in 1322 and is a hall church with a square nave and a polygonal choir, built in the 14th century. It has a rare feature in Transylvania: the bell tower is not at the west end but above the choir, between choir and nave, as at Agârbiciu, Ocna Sibiului or Turnișor.

Towards the end of the 15th century, as Ottoman raids multiplied, the Saxons fortified the church: they raised the nave and choir by two defensive storeys with loopholes, joined the buttresses of the west façade with brick arches carrying openings for pouring pitch, and protected the portal with a portcullis, whose guide grooves are still visible today. The church is surrounded by an oval wall 6–8 m high, with a wall-walk brought up above the food stores.

Don't miss
  • The bell tower raised above the choir, a rarity among Saxon fortified churches, with a clock and a wall-walk on timber brackets.
  • The portcullis of the west portal, whose guide grooves are still visible between the buttresses.
  • The fortress museum in the former food stores, with models, maps and objects from Saxon life.
  • The oval enclosure wall, 6–8 m high, with loopholes and a wall-walk over the stores.
  • The 1777 timber galleries, with musician angels painted on the west balustrade.
