About Bunești Fortified Church (Bodendorf)

At a glance: Monasteries and churches in Bunești, Brașov County. The visit takes 30 min. Information verified on 10 October 2026.

Bunești, which the Saxons called Bodendorf, is the seat of the commune of the same name, on the road between Rupea and Sighișoara. The Evangelical church in the middle of the village began as a late Romanesque basilica with three aisles, built towards the end of the 13th century. Later, when the village needed a refuge, the nave was narrowed by demolishing the side aisles and its walls were strengthened with buttresses linked by arches, above which ran a wall-walk. Around 1500 the choir was given a defensive storey with a row of openings for dropping pitch and boiling water.

The enclosure wall, built of river and quarry stone, still has its towers and gate tower, and along its inner face the row of covered chambers where families kept their provisions. The church's present look comes from the bell tower, whose brick upper part was added around 1847. The complex was restored in a European Union-funded project between 2010 and 2014 by the Fortified Churches Foundation.

Don't miss
  • The painted timber galleries by the Rössler family inside the narrow nave, built between 1680 and 1775.
  • The buttresses linked by arches and the wall-walk that rings the church.
  • The choir with its defensive storey and openings for dropping pitch, from around 1500.
  • The large north-west tower, with Pastor Nösner's inscriptions of 1680 on its walls.
  • The covered grain chambers built against the inside of the enclosure wall.
