Sfânta Precista, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, is the oldest surviving building in Galați and one of the city's calling cards. It was raised in the time of Vasile Lupu as a merchants' foundation: the brothers Dia and Șerbu, sons of Coman, merchants from Brăila, and Constantin, son of the merchant Teodor, who had built an earlier church on the same spot. The works are usually given as 1643–1647 (there is no certain date for the start), and the church was consecrated in September 1647. It was placed under the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos.

In a port exposed to invaders, it was also conceived as a refuge: builders brought from Transylvania gave the walls a thickness of up to 1.8 m, built the bell tower into the body of the church and fitted a defensive loft above the vault with 28 loopholes. The stone and brick come largely from the ruins of the Roman fort at Tirighina-Bărboși. The church was burned and plundered several times, most of all in 1821, and then rebuilt; it was restored in the 1950s, was a museum of medieval art between 1971 and 1990, and returned to worship after the restoration of 1991–1994, being reconsecrated in 1994.

Don't miss
  • The bell tower built into the body of the church, with a pointed roof, above the porch.
  • The fortified loft under the roof, with 28 loopholes, and the wooden gallery of the tower.
  • Walls up to 1.8 m thick, of stone and brick, with blind niches and decorative bands.
  • The setting on the bank of the Danube, at the city's kilometre zero, next to the promenade.
  • The neo-Byzantine painting inside and the icon of the Mother of God from 1817 on the iconostasis.
