Unitarian Church in Chilieni
About Unitarian Church in Chilieni
Chilieni (Kilyén in Hungarian) is a village on the southern edge of the municipality of Sfântu Gheorghe, first recorded in 1334, when its priest appears in a papal tithe register. The village takes its name from Saint Kilian. The church stands at the edge of the village, on the site of an older Romanesque one built over a 12th-century cemetery. The oldest parts of today's walls date from the 13th century, and the vaulted Gothic sanctuary was added in the 15th century. The tower is more recent, from 1829.
The church was originally Catholic. In the 16th century, with the Reformation, the community turned first to the Reformed confession and then to the Unitarian one, and the medieval paintings were covered with whitewash. Rediscovered in stages, they were conserved and restored in several campaigns; the latest work on the frescoes was officially handed over in 2017.
From outside, the white building with its tiled roof and slender-spired tower looks like many village churches in the Székely Land. Its value lies inside.
What you can see
The wall paintings of the 14th–15th centuries are among the most extensive in the Székely Land. On the north and west walls, in the upper registers, runs the legend of Saint King Ladislaus, with the fight against the Cuman and the rescue of the abducted maiden; below are scenes of the Passion of Christ. The south wall carries a large Last Judgement, with remnants of the Last Supper beneath it.
